This is a good thread, now I know what to look for when building my 454. John, how is the block comming along? Did you have to get a new one or resleeve the other one?www.streamlineautocare.com

Hi Shawn...it's coming along, slowly...the block that he had, previously sleeved, was NG.....scrap.. So I brought him the one from last year that I trashed..He's going to sleeve that one and it will be fine. He cleaned it, mag checked it (no cracks at all) and he's sleeving and boring it now. Should be done next week. I'll email you with more stuff. When your dreams turn to dust, Vacuum!

Jon the 496 is the best damn motor i have ever had. The thing makes power from off idle and keeps pulling hard all the way to 6200, and she still has more in her...but i am a little nervous about popping it.
Let me know about your build/plan and we will trade notes.....i have learned alot about strokers. Be prepared though when it comes to the valve train, that with a new stroke finding the right valves and pushrods are ganna be a pain. I dealt with Comp and we when through 3 cams before they got it right, 2 sets of pushrods, and 2 sets of rockers. I dont know if the Comp people are beig outsourced to India like everything else but, i found every village idiot that works there.
But after all the BS it is a hard running motor and runs on pump gas all day, cruise to the track and drive her home.
Good Luck with yours.

I have been having second thoughts on making a 496 instead of a 454.... Man o man. I thought that if I will be making a 454 instead of a 383 then it will be more money but then again a step up to make a 454 a 496 isn't going to be much more to get much more HP so maybe it's worth it? Shawn, I priced everything out, and it wasnt too much more for the 496...Machine work is a wash, you have to get the block bored and all that stuff anyhow...Heads will work with either, assuming they breath fairly well. My only extra expense was the stroker crank, rods and pistons. You can build a stroker with stock length rods and matching pistons, but it's not a good way to do it...puts lots of strain on the cylinder walls. I went with a 6.385 length rod and pistons to match. So, go for it!! You know I won't advise you against it.
Pat, I know what you mean, I have a huge stereo system in my Chevelle, but I hardly ever have it on, I like the sound of the engine better!! (Plus it's hard to hear with the car running!) And as far as the ricers go, my next vanity plate is gonna say ' NO4NJUNK' JohnWhen your dreams turn to dust, Vacuum!

Man, John, you just talked me into it! I went from a 350, to a 383, to a 454 and NOW a 496? I hope you will be paying for my gas!!! haha. By the time you know it I am going to have some 707 (I think that is what it is) like Pro60chevy has.... yeah right.
How much more difference in price did you come up with John, any estimated price range? Also I wan't to run on pump gas, at about 93 octane if possible and then go higher when at the track.
Where do you pick up all your parts at too John?www.streamlineautocare.com

Shawn, do you have to buy a crank, rods, pistons, bearings anyway for your 454? If you do, then upgrading to a 496 will be a few hundred dollars more. I have to buy an entire rotating assy, so Im looking at crank, rods, pistons, and balancing everything...plus all the smaller things...bearings, rings, etc. That part will vary from a low of 897.00 (pretty good, but lower end) up to 2200.00. Im still pricing the pkg, just spoke w/ them again today. I'll probably end up at somewhere around 1400.00 for the rotating assembly. I upgraded several of the parts already, and I might go a little higher, but not much if at all. I get almost my stuff from Competition Products in Wisconsin. Same owner as Howard's Cams that I told you about. I hardly buy anything from Summit or Jegs anymore. Keep in touch. JohnWhen your dreams turn to dust, Vacuum!

John, I wan't to find a bare block if possible. But if I do find a block that has the whole bottem, end etc. I plan to strip everything, bring it to the machine shop, let them do their magic, pick it up and start over. Mostly why I wan't to do that even though it's going to be TONS of money to do is so I can learn and then also so if I wan't high HP I don't wan't anything stock in there to where it may break later down the road, cause more problems, take more time from me to have to tear it all back down and spend even more money. Like I said I plan to do it right the first time that is why I am going to ask as many questions and read as many books and internet sites now and save me the hassel later. I know that always doesn't work out because you will always have problems but that one little problem and save me a whole bunch of others. That's the way I look at it at least.
Thanks for the pricing too. Does that shop your talking about have a website? I need to look into the crank, cam and rods you were talking about and I am going to stay away from Eagle now too. I read in a few other sites like Chevelle and somewhere else that I can't remember at the moment and all I heard was bad things about Eagle cranks and the only good things I heard of was when they were in plain street cars and such not drag cars, etc.www.streamlineautocare.com

I have a 402 in a 50 chevy pickup, no room at all between the pulleys and the radiator.
Where is a place I can look at a good selection of electric fans. My core support is vertically oriented too.

For max cooling from an electric fan installation, many fellows are using the Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan. Here are some links explaining the installation:
