    427 tall deck

Hi, I am new at this so be easy on me, I am only 17.

i just got a 427 truck motor. I now know they have a 10.2 deck, reverse rotation cam(I think) and 4 ring pistons. My question is if it is possible to put a standard cam and timing set on it to give it a normal rotation And if I put standard 427 pistons in it with the 6.135 rod but put a longer stroke in it? Any thing would help, so tell all you know. Thanks.

Yes,Yes,and yes, although I don't remember the specifics, But I can tell ya Eagle is a good source for the rods ya need, I ran one of those in my dirt modified on Alky back in the 80's and I can tell ya that thing was a MONSTER...Oh on mine we ran a stock stroke crank. I still got it sitting over in the corner, someday theres gonna be a 55 chevy, YEAH we'll have some fun then.....

You can, but it's not the best block to build on. With a tall deck block, you have to run spacers if you want a performance intake (I believe anyway) and you run into header fittment issues....Also, it's not a good idea to run a stroker crank with the stock length rods. Longer rods will not cause the piston skirts to push into the cylinder walls as much, so they will not wear as much...but mostly more power due to the longer stroke length. Im sure it would run fine, but with any tall deck, you run into all sorts of odd problems. Just a personal opinion, but I had a chance to buy two truck blocks and passed on both of them for the above reasons. Now on the other hand, if you picked it up for cheap, build it! Just price out your needs first, cause several things will be different. John

Oh I got it cheap. the hole truck was gived to me. I also have a 500 cad. but found the performance parts were very pricey. Have you ever heard of anyone building a caddy, and how much power do you think the 427 would build with merline heads and intake with about 13.1 comp.

pat mccarty I really appretiate your help on this engine I have had so many people tell me the tall decks are good boat ankers but I knew I should be able to build it. But just 2 more questions, what cam and heads would be the most power builders if I kept the stock crank. I am short on $$$ so the strocker is out for now. And how many R's can this turn safely.

joe you can use gm oval big ports they will do the job but when building up a engine combo look at what rpm you will you be at ?here some things to think about if you use a 454 crank and a 250 long rod and a 427 piston you can go from a 427 to 454 with a longer rod and this can be done cheap and get it zero deck if its a good block they can go 0.60 or 100 . for cam a roller 720lift I 270 @0.50 EX 278 on 108 if you run in mud you can get this stuff use on e bay like the cam intake but buy the piston new and the roller lifters new I hope this helps. if you bore this thing out .100 i would short fill it with block rock

pat mccarthy, I was thinking. Just how much clearence is needed for the 4and a half in stroke. And how big of a stroke can you stuff in this thing. I am also having a lot of trouble finding a timeing set for a tall deck.

    tall deck

the tall deck dose not have a raised cam timing set is the same as stock gm short deck 396 to 454 the only thing that is not the same the deck so with the tall deck you can put more in stroke and use a longer rod as how much stroke on this 427 tall deck with small bores i would not go more that 4 1/2 you can with a bow tie block get 572 with 4 1/2 bore 4 1/2 stroke or 4.600 with a 4.750 stoke i f you use steel rods and i would .080 so nothing hits and if you go 4 1/2 stroke the oil pan milodon makes are nice and the pan they make for the 4 1/4 will work with steel rod s on the 4 1/2 do not get nuts cut out the bottom of the block do not leave any shape spots on the bores
