DIYRodder,
I have the same ones you have, with the inset allen screw. I have thought about them as being the simple fix to this whole thing, but it dosent sound that way anymore.
Guys,
Alright, so flat tappert no good, what am i looking at as far as an alternative? I'm not an engine rebuilder, but im totoally capable of taking the heads/manifold and all that good stuff off. I also know how to set up the vavletrain so thats not a problem. What kind of engine knoweldge does this job require, i have the basics down, but i couldnt rebuild an entire motor without help. Someone mentioned saving me some money on cam choice, details? Thanks again guys, this is really giving me some good ideas about where to go with the motor.

Ben, I dont know if I would go so far as to say flat tappet cams are no good, there are millions of them installed with no problems...but if YOU are the one to have one go away, like I was a couple times, it's a different story. If you should want to go with a hydraulic roller cam, you better plan on about 900 bucks....after you pick yourself up off the floor, I'll tell you why.
You would need the roller lifters, springs and of course the cam itself. Rollers are a great upgrade (if you can afford it) because of their design, the ramps keep the valve open longer and higher with less stress on the valve train...more power, plain and simple. On the other hand, you can replace your flat tappet cam for about 150 bucks, so yes, it's a big difference. It was two reasons for me...I wanted to get the most power I could from the cam swap, and I was skeptical about the next cam going bad.
Can you find a friend who would help you if you have to do a complete rebuild?? It's not rocket science, but I dont know that you should tackle it by yourself. Im gonna send you an email, look for it. JohnWhen your dreams turn to dust, Vacuum!
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
