454 engine casting numbers
G'day, i've got a 454 motor that I am trying to identify which block I have, and what vehicle it came from. The casting numbers are:3999289 with a P cast next to it.
The block has the two tapped holes above the oil filter boss which I believe are for a cooler? I know that it is a 2 bolt mains.
Is it a high perf block? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.excesv454

I'm no expert but my book tells me you have a 72-79 block. The number on the block above the timing cover or on the front passenger deck will tell you what it came out of where it was built and when. I have a two bolt block similar to yours with three holes above the oil filter all tapped. It looks like two were for clutch linkages and the third, directly over the oil filter is still a mystery. Maybe some one else can help. Two bolt blocks are good for 600 H.P. ,don't bother with a 4 bolt conversion if you don't need it. Hope this helps.Last edited by Step Side; 06-29-2005 at 11:24 PM.

yes all two bolts big block have the small oil plugs on the side of the but the gm ho 4 bolts have big plugs on the side of them i think it 3/4 pipe and what gm cast in the block truck or hi pass. this differs on the block dose not mean much and the four bolt looks cool but you do not need it two bolts can take a lot i have been building big block for a long time and built some very hi hp on the stock two bolt block if you think you are building over 700 hp and running it at 6500 rpm and up for a long time like a boat or for the salt flats then i would use four bolt but gms stock block would not be my fist pick maybe a bow tie block . and if you build some thing like this there is better stuff to start with the fist thing i look at on any block is it been hurt dose it have sleeves in and dos it need more ? hase it been use up bored out to fare or line bored to much if so at that point i do not care if it two or four i will pass on it
