    free cam

I just got a cam give to me and the guy couldnt remember what size it was. It came out of his 396 and he thought it didnt come into power until about 3800 rpm. What I want to know is can anybody tell me what it is by this four didgit number on it or will I have to have it measured or how ever it is they check. The number is 1091, this is the only thing stamped on it. Thanx

Whatever it is, a used cam is barely worth the effort.

why do you say that if the lobes are bad cant i have it reground to something smaller. And even if it is junk thats another couple pounds for the scrap pile.

A used cam is normally worth no effort of putting it in because of a couple things, 1 if it has not been stored properly, they can and will warp, I think cams, you stand up just like cranks but I'm not shure. It might not look like the lobes are bad but they could be. If you had your cam reground, the money it cost could buy a new 1 with specs to match your engine, chances are, if the cam was removed from an engine, it is ither a stock cam, damaged in some way or too hot for the engine it was run in.

You can buy a brand new cam for less than 100 bucks....why would you even mess with a used one, especially one that you know nothing about?? It's way too much of a gamble.
