My '79 Mustang had a turbo 4, 19mpg. Blew it up, put in a non-turbo 4, 19 mpg. Chucked it for a '69 hipo 351 Windsor and 4-over std., 19 mpg!
These are Canadian gallons,by the way.
Fords are pre-programmed to get less than 20 mpg.

we have an 8.1 Silverado 4wd with the Allison overdirve. So it is a 496 inch big block with fuel injection. It gets 12mpg. Period.
It gets 12 in town, 12 on the highway, 12 towing a 4500lb jeep on a 1000lb trailer.
Sucking that much air thru a motor takes a certain amount of gas to go with it. Maybe you can pull 4 plug wires off and run a 540/2=270 motor part time.

...I had a new '69 Nova 375 HP 396 with the M22 4 speed when I was a kid. I drove it like a maniac but from what i can remember it only got like 5 to 10 MPG. Now this was a LONG time ago and I got on it at EVERY time I started out. But I do remember the gas milage was TERRABLE.... Bill

how do you plan on building this 540?whats the combobore stroke etc.?I bet if done right you could get about 10 to 13mpg.which is totally exceptable to me personaly for a part time ride with lots of fun and head turning.

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
