The best Air intake set up for my 72
Hi, im new to this forum, names matt me and my father currently own a 72 chevelle, with a 396 bored to a 421 CID engine, right now we are debating what kind of air induction system we want, the 2 inch stock SS hood with the flapper on the cowl of the hood with the snorkel style air cleaner, or a 4 inch bolt on cowl induction with a velocity stack air cleaner, we have a rochester quadra jet 4 barrel carb i was told it was a marine carb im still learning so pardon my ignorance to anything that doesnt exist, and please instead of making fun of me help me out on the correct word or name or style of the product. But i was wonder out of the two the first option being the most expensive and the second being the least expensive. But if anyone has a better way to get air to the engine with out making any serious mods to it. Thank you.

they did put rochester 4 barrels on boats and they are good carbs if you have one they are easy to tell the boat carb has no taps for vacuum and the base plate is black in color.they work good but tune up parts are hard to find .but if it works use it . on the intake it woud use a dual plane or air gap ,i do not know how much cam or how much cr you have so the intake is a good guess i use to run themo quad on my old 396 with dual plane and work geat .you can spend a lot of money but it mite not run any better. make sure you have a good exhaust.you cant get it in. if you cant get it out

well i dont know what exhaust headers on it, but i do know there is no cat and it goes all the way back to 40 series delta flow flowmasters, and the carb is best for the application as my dad said, and since he built the engine and tuned it himself and i been in it i know he knows what he is doing, im just looking for the best and coldest air flow available, but im thinking of doing a custom job on it, have a 4 inch bolt on cowl induction hood, with a custom air intake tube from the carb to a square air filter that sits about 3-5 inches from the cowl hood so that all the air that breaks over the cowl will hit the filter be at its coldest point and go straight to the carb, all i know is the intake is part of an edelbrock performance package that came with cylinder heads and crankshaft. But i do know the 421 has to be putting out close to 455 hp/520 ft lbs tq, like i said i been in the car once and thats all it took, i have been in many fast cars vette C5, 69 mach 1 with a totally beefed up 351W and none of those have compared to my chevelles power and torque. But thanks and still accepting ideas and suggestions towards air intake.

You could always run intake tubes to the low beam headlights like they did back in the day. Remove the low beams and run flexible tubes from there to the air cleaner. I've never liked the look but it will get fresh cool air to the carb. cheap.
