454 blown piston
i have a 454 with a piston that is dead.the top half is totaly scared up and near the edge of the there is a hole/dent.the clinder doesnt look scar ed.but its only that cylinder.all the other cylinders have 150 psi comp.i want to know how could that have happened i had it for bount a month never drove it on the freeway.how does a piston get blown?
what kind of pistons should i get to replace it?
how can i tell if i need to get it bored out or just honed?
how can i tell if the rods and crank are still good?
this is going to be my 1st rebuild so i need to know if there is anything i need to check and save money for.
thanks for any help you guys can give me.

if yoy use hpyer alloy pistons and did not have the rigth end gap to much cr to timming. to lean hot spot on the pistons hot spot on the head camber . there are many things . nos will burn down piston to .you mite be ok hone the bore out and putting a new piston in BUT you need to fine out what made the piston go away the crank mite be ok BUT i would take it all down and look it all over good

I would have to go out on a limb here and say, the best way to know if your rod and bearings and crank are ok is to disassemble. As to bore or hone, try honning it, if you can't take the scratches or nicks out, then you will need to bore. Be sure not to hone past your max clearance tollerance for piston to cyl. wall. As to replacing the piston/pistons, if you can find one new that is the same brand and composition as the other 7, then get that, if not, consider replacing all of them. I would do that, just to be safe anyway. If you have a failure on one, how long till another fails? Your gonna have to tear it down anyways, you might as well do it right.
Check all you tolerance for crank and cam, maybe look at your valve train while your there. Don't know what your $$ situation is, but getting your block bored 0.030 over would not be a bad idea, just to be safe.

yes the engine will have to come a part and see how much it will need. the piston and rod will have to come out and i do not know how you could do is with out taking it apart so at is point wash it up and look it over good if it is a fresh engine new bore and new piston cam chain oilpump then i would look it over good and check it out with a bore gage and hone it out .the part of the bore to look at is 1 to 2 from the top if this is mess up then it will need to be bore or sleeved as for the crank look at the rod bearings if the bearing look like it has bad patterns on it not even a cross the middle of the top of the bearing face, then it will need new bearings. you did not tell me much on this engine is it stock a re ring or is it a fresh engine what type pistons how much cr

i dont really know much about it i bought it from a guy that had it siting for bout a year.it was not the motor that came with the truck.so im just waiting right now on sum money to get a hoist and stand.then im looking at 250-300 for pistons and rings.and bout 150 for a stand and hoist.
does that sound bout right ?
how much would the honing and boring cost?
how much would the barings cost?
the motor looks stock the pistons look like the donut stock kind
what do i check on the vavletrain to see what caused this and how do i check it ?
the motors stock so i dont think too much compression caused this.

you can get pistons cheaper than that . reduild kit with cam lifters cast flat tops or dished i think you have dish .rings rod mains cam bearings stock oil pump v . 3 pice timing set and plug kit 389.99www .competitionproducks.com as far as pice on a bore job it may be $15.00 to $25.00 a hole i can tell you what i charge but is will not help you. i do not know the shop rate is were you live. the heads need to be check you will need to take them to the shop that have the tools to work on heads . and have them check out spring rate .cracks .see if they are flat if the vavle job is ok .check vavle guides. if all of this is good the head work can be $180 to $400 + it depens how much work they need and parts if you are building a stocker or somthing hi hp the price on parts can be very deferent sound like to me a good stock engine with a rv type cam and a good intake and headers and you will be set and it will not be a arm and a leg
