    Unhappy flow numbers and camshaft selection

     



    I am quite disappointed in my cylinder heads. They are worked over Edelbrock TBI oval port heads that have been angle milled and ported out to rectagular ports.

    I bought these heads off of www.racingjunk.com from a guy who supposedly had them in a 3300# Nova with a flat top equipped 496 and a pretty hairy solid roller that he said ran 6.20's in the 1/8. The machine shop where they were worked on said it made 730HP with a Victor Jr. and a 950HP. (Which now I SERIOUSLY doubt)

    The machine shop that did the work on them told me they flow 370/240 @ .800 and had 90cc chambers. I got them flowed on a 4.25 bore fixture without a pipe since my local race engine shop didn't have one as small as my 1.75 headers.

    Here are the numbers on #3 cylinder("bad" runner) with 28" test pressure

    they originally were Edelbrock ROVAL

    Now they are Rect 2 13/32 x 1 27/32 or 1 25/32 depending on if it is the good port or bad port

    how does this compare to other rect heads?

    Are these worth trying to go fast with?

    What cam should I select?

    What do you guys think? Remember this is a 454 in a S-10 Blazer. It weighs about 3600#. TH350/Currie 9" w/ 4.11 gears and 26" slicks at the track. I plan on street driving it as much as I can. I still haven't pick an intake either, but it will have a Holley 0-9380 carb on it.

    Did I get seriously screwed over on this deal? Pretty much everyone has told me that I am the stupidest person on earth and I should get rid of these on ebay and start over, They aren't even worth their weight in scrap aluminum.

    Well....World Products cast Sportsman II heads flow 230 for a 350 small block- does that help any?

    What you have is a good street head.Put in one of the hyd. roller cams and have fun.It should still make 550 hp.Now if you want to go racing that is a whole other story.Then you would have to re-think your whole set-up.Don't be to hard on yourself.We have all been there.Twenty years ago or more I bought what I thought was eight great pistons.I took them to a local machine shop had the machine shop check them out.The machinist very carefully checked all eight pistons then he reached into his pocket took out a big cigar lit it and then he turned over one of the pistons and flicked his ashes into the piston and he says to me "son now you have a eight good asy trays or eight bad pistons depending on how you look at it.I was very mad and he could see I was getting mader.He then asked who I had bought them off of.I told him and he said he knew who it was.Two hours later I had my money back.A few days later I went to work for the machine shop who had checked my pistons.I still keep a few cigars laying around for that purpose only.Remember if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.Also remember "if it uses air and gas you can make it go fast".

    ported out to rectagular ports........ WHY did they do that???
    ported to rectagular was is something that should not have been done to the heads .i would run somthing in the 570 to 600 lift and use them or try to sell them or find something NOT ported out. you may not need a big rectagulars ported heads ? the O ports do a very good job .when they cut the heads out they may of ruin the head port velocity.

    I talked to Kirk at Bullet Cams today and he recommends a Hydraulic roller as well.

    296/302 advertised
    242/248 @ .050
    600/600 lift
    110/108

    w/ 130#-150# seat and 325-375# open spring pressures.

    He said it should be good for right around 600hp and fairly streetable with a Vic Jr. intake and 3500 stall converter.

    He also finally gave me a definate answer that the stock type lifters can handle up to 612 lift.

    Are these cams too big or too small? I'm thinking a bit big, but I am kind of new to the big block stuff. I've been told they like more cam than small blocks do.

    Well I've decided on the Lunati Voodoo 60622 hydraulic roller.
    282/290 adv dur
    231/239 @.050
    .600/.600 lift
    110/106

    My DCR will still be rediculously low at 7.4, but I can't do much about that now. I'll definately be able to run 87 in it.

    I am looking at using Comp 914 springs so I can use my TI retainers. If I install them at 1.860" it will give me 146 on the seat and 372 over the nose. Will this be ok for factory hydraulic roller lifters?

    I also think I'm going with a Vic Jr for intake with the gear change to 4.11's

    DD2000 tells me 513hp @ 5500 and 543lb-ft @ 4500 using the flow numbers listed earlier. I'm hoping that translates to 400hp at the rear tires.

    Now I need to pick a converter. I'd like something pretty tight in the 3000-3500 range. I like my Hughes GM25 converter since it only has about 3% slip at the big end on the track and doesn't create much heat when cruising. I am also thinking I need to go with a smaller diameter converter to reduce the rotating mass of the drivetrain.

    What do you guys think?

    check the lifter to make sure the oil holes do not hang out on full lift and the stock hold down tray may not work .this will need to be check at full lift. if the hold down tray bottoms out on full lift you may shim it up on the block stand of with some washer i think you springs will work they will take a set and drop 10 psi i have run that much seat psi they will work .get some good push rods

    You will need to bring the compression up in that engine,it will be dead especially with alluminum heads ,the overlap of the cam will kill the torque,there is no cylinder pressure with a cam like that and no compression,you would be betterwith stock large oval ports with some flow work ,on your combo. Ive done oval ports that outflow rectangular heads and they will rip a house down with the torque they make,which is what you need in your combo.

    The oval ports I had on there were only good for 322hp and a 12.80@106 with 4.11 gears and couldn't even pull the 3.25 gears I switched to. On the 2-3 shift the engine bogged down.

    What heads do you suggest I get to run with like 80cc chambers? I couldn't find any with chambers smaller than 99cc.

    I wish BBC's were as easy as SBC's My last 350 was all cast with machine shop flat tops and aluminum Pro Action 180's with a XE274 cam and Prof Prod intake and it made 276 RWHP. It was good for 13.24@105
