    Open Chamber vs Closed

I need some advice on something, I have a 87 454 with cracked heads. They are open chamber and I have access to a set of closed chamber heads. It is in a mothorhome, the question I have is can I replace the open with closed and not have to run a medium or high grade fuel in the thing ? Thank for ANY adice.

You know while you have the heads off you might have them reworked a little. You could have them ported, new guides/seals installed and then have the chambers reworked. A little touch up in the chambers could give you a few more cc's and drop the compression back a little to be 100% sure that you can run on 87 octane.

Also, get some indexing washers and index a set of sparkplugs for the heads. I know this can be done with the heads on the car but you can get a better idea of what's going on with them off.

Thanks for the input, the heads will be reworked, now guides and whatever else they need, no sense not to do it while they are off. This motor is in a motorhome so I don't want to have to yank them off again because of a bad valve or guide. I didn't think about water injection. If I have a ping I will go that route. Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it.

You are right Streets. I keep forgetting that cars with distibutor type ignitions can use those gimmick plugs. Try putting those things in a car with a DIS ignition and you are asking for trouble.
