yes i know that je and ross will make any thing but i did not want to spend $650+ on a set of je or ross this was a engine to sell not eatand had a steel new l88 crank just could not put a set of cast pistons in it this was some fill in at the shop and play with. all the big bore stuff i do this is close as i wanted to get to a small block .and got it at a fair price. all the 454 blocks are drying up and thought it would be fun? built some over 25 year ago you know relive youth that ross numer is no good for 4.280 bore 427 +30 or something is not rightLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-13-2006 at 08:55 PM.

yes this will be the way i told you have to work on the heads and it will be done. the same cam roller small but this is a gm take out of boat engines and they work good and they are cheap you have to do a bit of work to get it to work like get the gm cam plate this keeps the cam in the blockand used a new mark6 timing set but this is no big deal and run a electric fuel pump they work better any ways that block mounted. i think

I am getting ready to build up my 402 in a 72' monte carlo per Pat's advice. My rotating assembly has been rebuilt recently so I am taking the 292( last 3 digits) heads down a bit which should yield about 9 to 1 compression. I'll do some pocket porting and shrouding with new ss 2.06/1.77 valves. I'll probably end up with about $500 in them when I'm done. As for the cam, I usually prefer crane but I called comp and he suggested the xr 276 - 224/230 @.50 510/510 lift. This will be my first hydraulic roller. I feel that the lift is unusually small for a roller cam but this is the one the man suggested. I don't care for high lift cams anyway due to the valve train geometry problems that can arrise. I'll go with roller tip rockers and performer intake. I have a stock 750 quadrajet that will be reworked. I have AC and power steering. my intent is to maintain matching numbers and generate around 350 to 375 hp. I seem to like what Pat has to say about 396/402 engines.

i think you will be happy with you 402 your cam sound very close to the cam that i will run in my 402 build. you sound like it .you on the right track. to me the low lift cam will work good make sure there is no junk in the head chamber floor so you get a good flow

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
