396 build up and 12's possible?
A long time ago I purchased a 396 block from a buddy of mine. I had a machine shop bore it out .060 and align hone and surface the deck. I'm using 781 open chamber heads to let it breathe a bit. The heads had .065 taken off the deck surface. My compression is supposebley 10.8:1. The heads are being ported to flow about 300 CFM and also a 3 angle valve job. The cam i'm using is a lunati mechanical here the specs: In:.552 Ex:552 of lift-108 deg of lobe sep. -INO 12,
INC 40, EXO 48, EXC 4, the duration is 232in and 232exh these specs are at .050. The intake is going to a Weiand Stleath dual plane. The carb is going to be a holley 750 vacuum secondaries. The headers are hooker 1 7/8. I'm running stock lenght connecting rods(6.135). The rockers are also stock 1.70. The engine probably will go into a truck that weights around 4500lbs. The truck has TH350 with 4.56:1 gears with 32inch tall tires. A lot of my friends tell me my motor will make around 450HP 475lbs torque, how much power and torque do you guys think it will make? and also do you think a truck with the motor will run 12's with good traction?Last edited by steelsixpack101; 08-23-2006 at 01:17 AM.

No. Put the engine into something lighter and you've got a shot. JMO.

At 10.8 with that cam, dynamic compression ratio will be 9.22:1, so you'll be unable to run pump gas. I don't know if that makes any difference to you or not.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

really doesn't matter too much if i can't pump gas, just as long as i got over 10.5:1 i'm happy. how much power you think this motor will pump out.

It's gonna make one hell of a lot of cylinder pressure, so it should be pretty stout. Maybe someone with a desktop dyno can answer your question.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

With that cam you might wan't to buy some CRANE STEEL ROCKER arms with LONG SLOT'S.insted of STOCK and check for coil-binding.with the right stall-converter and a tail wind down track any things possible.at 4500lbs if you do 12's I hope you get it STOPPED!! GO for it.

Hay TECINSPECTOR,good advice on the GAS i don't think SIXPACK has priced CAM2 latly it didn't matter to me either.went to track last Sunday CAM2 $6.50 per gollen110 octane.$40.00 bucks for about 10gal.

I probably more than likely put it in a camaro, my heads still have stock 2.06in
1.72ex, i hearing 2.19/188 will hurt me, because the smaller bore shrouds that big valve, i was thinking maybe boring to 4.250 to make 427cubes though it could be waste of money, my bores are at 4.155 whick makes 408 cubes. The heads have lot of bowl work to them, there is a good possibility that my heads will flow very well, hoping 300 cfm, i will probably flow out my heads this coming week. pat, what kind of desktop dyno do you have? I have the program Dyno SE and i put my info in, with the same specs above, with dual plane, 750 holley, smaller tube headers, solid cam, the program is thinking, 495hp at 5700RPM and 510ft torque, which to me seems quite a bit excessive, but if any of you guys have dyno simulation program, you try it out with the specs at the topLast edited by steelsixpack101; 08-23-2006 at 09:13 PM.

on the my desk top dyno i put in on the heads pocket porting, stock size valves. Sometimes desk top dynos are little bit misleading, but they do give realistic torque/horsepower curves on cam profiles. The cam i'm using is a mechanical not a roller- so i'd say 450hp maybe 480Torque. what did your desktop dyno say?
