Oh yes, another 366 tall deck question (no I dont want a 454 or 502 ha ha)

Ok guys I need specs, I have an old boat anchor of a 366 tall deck (in my school bus which is where its staying) and I need to know if anyone here knows what the factory specs on it were, its an 82. I'm curious on what cam choices I have for it, and what did it come with?. How much lift do you think it could handle?.... but ya any hp or torque specs would be great. thanks...

Can someone point me to a link where I could find 366 specs... been looking no luck yet...

Here's all I could find....not a popular engine for much of anything besides busses and trucks.

are the heads on these motors the same as anything else? I've been told the norm for max cam lift on a stock head is about a 1/2 inch of lift is this correct? would this engin you think handle something like that? thanks.

I scavenged one a few years back and it had a steel crank, the rods are also garden variety 3/8ths but supposedly better forgings, not sure but I think they are standard length and the difference is in the block height and longer pushrods.

Look in an old Chilton's truck manual for the 366 specs.... If I remember correctly, these engines had the 4 ring super heavy pistons???? With the correct cam, it could probably produce some fairly good toruqe.... Not much of a BBC guy, maybe Pat or one of the Chevy engine guys will have some advice for you....

Awesome dave, got ahold of an old chiltons it for a 71-78 but every 366 spec for all years holds the same, mines a 82 so I hope it still holds true.

I found it says the Cam lobe lift is .234 no where near a half inch and Open is 220@1.40 Closed is 90@1.80

No this is where I turn to you guys now that I have hope its not already near the half inch mark and ask where can I go from the .234 and what are the pros and cons? Basicly the thing tops out at 60-65 going down the freeway and climbing hills in wyoming on the I-80 the thing can slow down to 25 miles an hour I dont want to change engines as this ones still got tons of life in her, I quick cam change might give me the little bit of uuumphhh I need to get over the hills faster but I dont want to harm the engine by putting in too big of a cam. Any cam experts out there that can give me some advice, now that were armed with its got a .234 lifted cam as of now... thanks so much guys...

Might just want to call Comp Cams or one of the cam companies tech lines, those guys will ask all the right question and make a recomendation.... Don't bother calling Summit or Jegs, most of the mail order houses just have whoever showed up for the job interview answering tech questions. Spend a nickel on long distance and talk with one of the cam company techs, they usuallly know their stuff and can get you a cam that will do what you want it to do....

How big is this bus? I wouldn't put anything bigger than a 202-210duration@.050 to keep your off idle torque. Your lift at the valve on the stock cam is .397 if it has a 1.7 rocker which it most likely does. I would probably go with a cam around 208@.050 and as close to .500 lift as possible. Probably won't find one with much more than .480 lift from a cam grinder with that duration. Try to find one with an LSA of about 110 or 112.
