I'm ditching the performer
I'm going back to the 1972 cast iron non egr intake for stealth reasons.( i know what your thinking) How much hp, tq can i expect to lose? Is there anything that I can do to improve the performance of this stock intake? I'm involved with some local drags and want the engine to look as stock as possible. I'm using snorkle cleaner with k&n filter. Thanks

if it's a standard edel performer, expect to loose about 0% of what you have, just gain a little weight. You don't know what you've got til it's gone

it is a standard performer. The only diff I see is the height of the intake. Is there anything that I can do to increase performance of the stock intake? Thanks for the reply

i think you will see zip from a gasket match . why dont you sand off the makers name eldelbrock and performer and paint it engine color ? or if you want the stock intake fill the ex cross and run a wooden open spacer or phenolic keep the hot oil off the but of the intake by using a L88 intake (pan may not fit?) i would do the paint job. the stock in takes are heavy. how smart are the fools your trying to fool ?the sound of the engine they should know it not stock. so what is the big deal with the intake? the older Gm car did use a hi iron intake. paint it tell them it a 69 396? some one that did not know much could not tell when painted and with the names off the intakeLast edited by pat mccarthy; 01-10-2007 at 08:11 AM.

i ran stock valve covers on a big block i would double up on the gaskets to keep the roller rockers from beating there way out .i had a thermo quad carb on top of the intake did not look like much? that what they said when i beat them and then show them what i had. i strip off the paint off the car so guys look at it as junk . now that was fun. making them look like fools with there girl friends in the car. them gold chain wearing trans am /camaro guys are still looking for that GTO

Sleepers are fun. I built my then-wifes '68 Mustang coupe into a mid 11 second car with a Gapp and Roush 351 Cleveland, top loader, and 4:88's. Kept the dog dish hub caps and whitewall tires.
Pulled off an interstate ramp on day and picked up a hitchhiker (back when that was safe ) As we got onto the four lane there was a Chevelle and some other car lined up in front of us, ready to drag race. They took off, and I got behind the Chevelle in the fast lane. I'm pushing him all the way, and when he got past the other guy he moved over into the slow lane, and I blew past him like he wasn't moving.
I looked over, and the hitchhiker was scared to death, and all he could say was "what the h*** is in this thing." He got out right after that.

i did the hi way thing and all most run over a flat bed truck was runing a 67/68 camaro pull out on the hi way and waved him on at 6500 rpms in fouth gear he tried to keep up but the blue smoke was pouring out the tail pipes. i was coming up and fast on a truck in one lane and the back of a bug in the other with my foot nailed to the brake( love them drum brakes) run it seamed like two block with them to the floor car just was not stoping or slowing down much. i was looking at 80+mph hitting the shoulder but they started to speed up if one of them hit there brakes it would of been very bad

thanks for the reply guys. I have painted the performer and it does look a bit stealthy but the snorkle scoop sits too high and looks stupid. I have a chrome plain aircleaner on it now but it looks stupid with the orange valve covers. I think that I will put the stock 1971 chrome valve covers on and that should more original/ correct. It sounds like I am nit picking but these guys I'm racing are well versed as to what is factory and what is not. They are all good racers. Some of them have run super stock class professionally. thanks for the advise.

If that's the case, then my opinion is that you aren't gonna fool them with a little paint. Stroke it to a 434 and tell 'em it's a 305. I think you're really gonna shoot yourself in the foot by reverting to a stock intake.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.
