427T build up
I hope some of you guys can help me out. I have a 1969 Chevelle Malibu that I stole for near nothing about 5 years ago. I have worked on the body for the past few years, new rear quarters, trunk, etc... It had a p....307 in it. So I gave the motor away in hopes of someday building a big block for it. I recently found a 427T motor that a guy told me I could have if I pulled it out and got rid of the truck. I took the block to the machine shop to my surprise it was a 427T and it was a virgin block. The heads were in good shape but they said they are junk.
Anyways,...The machine shop balances everything and does the work on the block but they do not re assemble them. Ordering some stuff and reassemble is where I will need some help. I just purchased a set of Speed Pro Pistons slightly domed. Should make about 10:1 compression. I ordered the Edelbrock Performer RPM cam in hopes of someday purchasing the heads also. I am using the factory crank and rods. I was told they are heavy duty and they were in good shape. They told me I need to get some ARP rod bolts, how do I find out if they are 3/8 or 7/16? Will it matter?
I want to put this in my Chevelle and turn it into a modified COPO clone. Except it will only look like a COPO on the outside. I plan to use a 250 shot of nitrous. (I purchase forged pistons) If anyone has had the headache of trying to fit one of these in a chevelle, any info for engine parts would be greatly appreciated (ie, rings, main cap studs, head studs, waterpumps long or short-electric or manual, gaskets, fuel pump, intake, distributor, carb. . I have an SS hood but am going to fab a slight raise in th scoops to accomodate the intake. Any web sites to get new products at an extremely reduced price?
What parts do you recommend to build this as bad as possible, more strip than street? However, money is an option. I am a father of 5 and a school teacher. My kids will flip when I do a wheelie leaving one of these days.
Thanks

the rod bolts will be 3/8 that is what you need you can stud the bottom end but would not need it. what are you going to run for pistons and rods ? any ways. the block is 10.200 with that crank and 6.135them stock pistons are four ring piston you just can not put a 427 9.800 deck piston in it an call it good it will be down in the hole . i have put tall decks in my GTO s they do not just fall in for all the work if you want to do this put a 4.1/4 to4.1/2 crank in it496- 526+ or you can run a454 crank and a 427 9.800 deck pistons with a long rod and get a462-469 this has been in many old post .you should look thru themLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-08-2007 at 06:28 PM.

Thanks for responding. All right here is what I did. I just got the pistons and yes my dumb a.. got 427 car pistons. The machine shop called me to inform me. The stock crank is good and so are the rods. I am assuming they are heavy duty since they came out of a truck. Are you saying that I could use the stock rods and a 454 crank? or the stock crank and longer rods? Which would be better. If I can use the stock rod with a 454 crank that would probably be best because I will get more cubic inches....Is that what you are saying.
I am pretty new to this so I just want to make sure I have it correct.
Thanks

you would use a 427 car piston ch of 1.765 one 454 crank 4.000 this get you a 462 .030or a468.060 or a470 .070 ,475 100 ,482 125,over on the bore the rod you need would be 6.425 long you would be .010 down in the hole BUT they would be customs rods $$ so a 6.385 rod 250 longer than stock and cut off the deck .040 to be down .010 in the hole. i would just cut 030 off the deck call it good you would be 020. down in the hole or go .005 more that would put you at .015this is a lot of work for small cid. i would save your money and build a 4.1/2 crank 526+ or just sell it and let some fine out how much work it takes .when all done you can get a 468 short deck that will bolt up headers will fit and the cid will be the same and may be less money in the long run. on you truck rods they are ok but they will not work for your build. there are better rods out now.at one time some guys used them in mild builds but there are H beams you can get new for $300 that are much better now

I found a Scat 9000 4.25 crank. If I was to purchase that crank, what length rods would I need? Would this then make it 528cu?
