If your engine is still running I'd check the gauge. Those gauges have a small orifice in them that can clog very easily. You can see the orifice when you remove the gauge it is visible inside the inlet threaded fitting. I have had it happen on mine with erratic gauge operation.
I wore a camouflage T-shirt once. The response in the pub was "Oooh, it's a floating head!" .
