10 to 1 will should be fine.... i don't know what gas you can get there... i can get 94 but alot of places can only get 91-92.... the cam is one of the biggest facters in running compression...the cam can beeld off pressure so you can run static compression higher...

I see this a lot. The 700R4 was not designed for the torque of a built BBC. In fact many built 700R4's fail prematurely behind built SBC's from what I have seen personally and read/heard. The cases are fundamentally weak leading often to bearing misalignment and premature failures.
Use a built TH400 and if you need the overdrive get the Gear Vendors unit and you will then have a 6 speed transmission. Only $2600 for the OD unit though.Jon Kitzmiller, MSME, PhD EE, 32 Ford Hiboy Roadster, Cornhusker frame, Heidts IFS/IRS, 3.50 Posi, Lone Star body, Lone Star/Kitz internal frame, ZZ502/550, TH400

I build the 700R4 for clients all the time for the quarter mile runs. The most recent was for a Big Block powered Monte Carlo putting out over 625 hp and 780 ft lbs of torque. The point is, it was three years ago since the original build and the most recent teardown was for clutch and band freshening along with just a solid inspection. No problems showed up and and it still clicks off 10.10's on a consistant basis. 700R4's can work if built right. What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

I think Ive decided on a 454 stroked to a 496....I still would like to know a good head to run, ex.. combustion chamber cc, intake cc, valve size..I was looking at the Brodix Race-Rite heads or the BB 2-Plus, or the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads...Im not sure if I should use a round port or the rectangular port....
Thanks so far guys,
Harmon

if your runing only to 5500 a set of O ports should work fine if you are moveing up the power band then a set of small rect ports would work good toIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Thanks,
I plan on driving the car on the street alot, so my neighbor told me that rect port are to big for street cars??....I would like to get 550/600ft at a relatively low rpm(2500/3000)...
AFR make a nice set with a 305 intake runner, I would have to get all the spec's...It sounds like a good medium range head...
I just want to make sure I get the right parts for this build...
Thanks again

He is building a 454 and a 540, Hes running the Edlebrock rpm heads #6045 and the Edelbrock cam #7162 with a CR of 9.6:1 on the 454.. I t is suppose to make 540HP@6k and 540ft/lbs@3k-45k...I would like something with alil more snot...Thats why I was thinking about running a lil bigger head and roller hydl bump stick, and take the CR to about 10:1...

chevy, do you have something that says he has that much?? i'm not trying to be a asshole but i run into hundreds of guys with 600hp engine that i run away from with a real 500hp.. 600hp pump gas 496 isn't just you run of the mill big block. there some though a cash that goes into something like that. i would go with a little bit bigger head then needed just because fast is never fast enough and having head in the bank is nice thing. hyd rollers?? i don't use them so i might not be the right guy to comment in those. i would run a smallish soild roller with the right spec's so you don't rattle the hell out of it with pump gas. just remember listen to just one guy because cross one of us with the other will only get you into trubble. find someone you trust and stay there.. good luck.

500caddy,
My neighbor used a build sheet from a Edelbrock 454 that was dynoed at those numbers (not saying his is going to be the same but it gave you a good base to build off of(lot of varialbles))...
Do you have to adjust solid rollers as much as solid tappets?
Thanks guys,
Harmon

i run all solid rollers in all my cars i sell solid roller to guys that pay me to set there valve train. you do not have to go thru them much. but guys that do not like the sound or can not set there valves they get hyd rollersIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
