Bbc ????
Ok, I think Ive decided to go with a standard BB, Now all I need to know is what I need to build it...Ive found a 396 and a 454, the 454 is a brand new genvi block...Which one should I get????, both are stock bore...Im running it in a 69 camaro...I would like around 550hp on pump gas,its going to be driven on the street alot...If anyone could give me a parts list, so I can go shopping that would be great...If anymore info is needed just ask.....
thanks Harmon

Most everything will swap between them. You'll need a adapter to run the 2 pc. crank in the new block. Thats one option, drop the 396 crank in the 454 block and you get a 427. Use the older heads if they are decent castings and set up w/hard seats. Don't recall which head gaskets you need to use,but I'm sure all it takes is a call to any of the gasket companys to find out. If the 396 has the good 'truck' rods, they are the better of the factory 3/8 rods.Unless you happen to have a set of 7/16 laying around, thats all you need.
A good rebuild and properly picked 'standard' hot rod stuff and 550hp isn't hard to hit.

you can not run the gm mark 4 heads on a mark 5/6 engine i have never seen the truck/ thumb rods ever used in a 396 the stock 3/8 bolt rods should take 500 hp with good bolts .if you do, not have any rods you would be better off with some I beam scat rodsLast edited by pat mccarthy; 08-12-2007 at 11:11 AM.

I plan on starting with a bare block, and plan on running alum heads with I beam rods, and a roller cam. Im not sure of what heads, cam, intake, rod length...I thought about using a 4.25 stoker crank in the 454, but whot rods would I have to get? or I want to put a 4.00 crank in the 396, and again not sure of rod length? I have heard that the 396 blocks are weak?
Thanks

396 block weak NO .if you use a 4.00 crank in a 396 and use the KB pistons you would use a stock rod of 6.135. if you build a 496 you can use a stock 6.135 rod but you can get a 6.375 rod for it and buy spr pistons every one makes shelf pistons for a 496 buildIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

them heads would work with a small roller cam with 10to1 cr .you really have not said what RPM you want to run at this has every thing on how you build it .you should be looking at TQ and not hpIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

newbie here, with those heads you can order a rotating kit from eagle to handle 500-600hp for 1400. the part number is b18021l this kit will let you run pump gas if the cam is right. that kit comes in std all the way to .100 over bore....like mr maccarty said a good roller cam would do you good. for 500hp a rpm air gap will work and a 4150 holly 750. cam spec somewere around .550-575 lift those heads crap out around there. duration hi 240-50 at .050 should do well. just make sure you spend a little to have a pro look at the head and set them up for your cam.. don't trust the out of the box heads and just throw them on. i have seen way to many screw ups from ready to run stuff. good luck with it.
