496 Question
Saw an ad for a 2001 496 block and crank. Is this the block that is the basis of the 496 talked so much about here. I thought it was a stroked 454. lol shows what I know. He wanted 350."oohh...thats gonna leave a mark!"

you are correct.
A 496 is normally a 454, 0.060 over, with a 4.25" stroker crank (versus standard 4" stroke).
What he is selling may be a bored block, and a stroker crank. Good deal if they are in useable condition. JMHO

Anyway this is what he says it is: " its a brand new,gm 496,8.1 L,4 bolt block and gm crankshaft for the same.block casting number is 12558110, the crank has the number 721 cast onto it,on one throw,179 cast into another, and the letters HS 340 stamped ,not cast, onto another." Is this the base for a good build or am I better off with a 454 and starting with it? If there is a 496 block, why would you wanna use the 454 to get to a ci that exists already?"oohh...thats gonna leave a mark!"

That is a 4 7/16" bore block with a 4" stroke crank. It is a GM available piece.

I did say.."normally..." Havent heard of that block before this.
How does that compare (performance wise) with the stroker 496 ? Sounds like a good deal no??

The factory big bore block is an excellent piece for a healthy big block build. The price certainly looks lika a bargain.

sound like a deal but it may not when you put it down on paper.. it is not . old big block parts will not fit the new engine????????and you will have to buy the rest of the parts to build it and they will not be cheap .you are better off getting a 454 mark 4 and a cast steel crank .060over and 4.250 will get you there and very easy to get parts and are some what cheapIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

THis is GM's revised Vortec Big Block. 108mm bore X 111mm stroke. Heads are completely different from Gen IV,V, VI blocks. Symmetrical ports, revised 6 bolts per cylinder for better head gasket sealing. Aftermarket parts are available though http://www.raylarengine.com/, but very expensive. Uses SEFI and DIS igntion. I'd pass.

Ever since putting 2.02 camel humps on my 350, as I am cruising there is a slight surging in the engine. If I put my foot in it to give it load it is smooth as can be. Have done many different timing...
