Asking 427 Opinions...
HOWDY ALL... I AM ABOUT TO EMBARK ON A JOURNEY, A BUILD THAT I HAVE ALWAYS DREAMED OF... I PLAN TO BUILD A 427 TALL BLOCK, MATE IT TO A SAGINAW 4 SPD, AND DROP IT IN A 66 CHEVELLE 300 2DR POST. THIS AMONG MANY OTHER ONGOING PROJECTS, I NEED... NOT HELP REALLY... MORE LIKE ADVICE FROM SOMEONE MORE SEASONED AT BUILDING RODS THAN ME. I HAVE A 65 OLDS CUTLASS F85 THAT NOW HAS A FRESH BEBUILT 455 AND TURBO 350 IN PLACE OF THE 330 AND 2SPD AUTO. ALSO I HAVE A 68 FIREBIRD THAT I AM PLANNING ON STICKING A NICE LIL 400 AND MUNCIE INTO...
BUT FOR NOW, THE QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
WILL A 427 TALL OR TRUCK BLOCK FIT INTO A STOCK 66 CHEVELLE, WITHOUT TOO MUCH DIFFICULTY?
WILL A SAGINAW 4 SPD BE A GOOD CHOICE FOR THAT MOTOR, AND WHAT GEARS SHOULD I USE IN THE REAR WITH IT?
WHAT INTERNALS SHOULD I USE FOR A GOOD, STRONG, DAILY DRIVABLE, PUMP GAS ENGINE?
ANYONE WHO HAS ANY INFO FOR ME ON ANY OF THESE CARS, PLEASE, LET ME KNOW. I AM LOOKING FOR OPINIONS OTHER THAN MINE...
THANKS GUYS...Last edited by scrilla4rilla; 02-18-2008 at 03:14 AM.

the saginaw will not hold up to much QT the big block can make. if just driving it will move it that is about all. the tall deck will take some work the get to fit but can be done i have had 3 tall decks in my 66 gto.s same frame headers will need to be made or you may find someone that makes them. for any kind of builds with the tall deck there will be things that may not work stock damper water pump oil pan there is parts on the inside of the engine that are not that hot for hp is this a driver or are you looking for performance i would build it bigger then a 427 and the rear end that is hard to say if a 12 bolt with good axles and a limited slip would workLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-18-2008 at 07:42 AM.

if you are building a stock stroke 427,use a low deck block, everything will be easier, fit better, parts cheaper and more available, use the steel crank and rods from that truck motor, they are very good pieces for a street build,OR if you must use that tall deck ,bore and stroke it to the max,you will need custom headers, dizzy, manifold, more trouble, more money ,more POWERLast edited by rabid rat; 02-18-2008 at 10:03 AM.

you need a short deck 454 block to make a 427 a ok engine but if you have a 9.800 short deck block why build a 427 and not a 468or 496 this build will not cost that much for the time and getting the tall deck to fit in the car i just can not see it sorry to rain on you i did mine for bigger CID 573 in both cars and a 632 soon i hope a 11.500 deck 734 CID i like making things fit and like to make parts and build and machine engines i build headers to so it is more like a rolling business cardLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-18-2008 at 11:07 AM.

Well Thanks For The Responses......
I Know I Want A Big Block... And I Know I Want A 4spd... So, 454, 427, Or 396??? And Which 4spd, Saginaw, Muncie, Oh I Found A Muncie M21... I Just Want A Daily Drivable Car, But I Want It To Have Power, I Want A Muscle Car... What Would Be The Best Option For Me As Far As The Car, 1966 Chevelle 300 2dr?

Even the M21 will not take to much beating on . Go with a B/W super T10 . This is the more stronger 4 speed . They were in 1976 to 1980 Z-28s and T/As . And Corvette's you sould be able to find one on your Local Craigs List . If you need any Ideas on the OLDs and Pontiac builds . Just ask I love to build them car's to . COOL

Forget the Saginaw. That was a cheap four speed for low hp small blocks like my 71 Chevelle. Forget about the tall block, too. Those was for medium duty trucks that I think used taller pistons for durability, not more power. I like the 427 just because it is internally balanced and has less rotating mass as long as the price is right. Pontiac engine builders use 400's over 455's for the same reason. Have a blast.

Again, Thanks For The Replies...
I Have, Based In No Small Part From Your Opinions Guys, Narrowed It Down To A 454, And A Bw Super T 10... I Can Pick Up The 454 For Around 750 Complete. And The T10 Is Like 500 With The Linkage And Shifter. So I Have Pretty Much Got That Situation Handled... I Just Want Something I Can Drive Everyday And Still Whoop Some Ass When I Want To...
Now I Have A ? About My Cutlass...i Got It All Together And The Engine Sits Too Low In The Engine Bay. The Headers Sit Right Against The Control Arms On The Pass Side And Snug Against The Frame On The Driver Side... Should I Try To Find Taller Motor Mounts, Or Should I Try To Shim The Ones That I Have? I Was Thinkin Bout Like 1\8th In Steel Plates As Shims. But Im Not Sure If That Will Cause Alignment Problems Or If It Will Be Cause For Weakness In The Mounts. This Is My First Attempt At Building A Car. And I Already Have Two Other Projects In The Works. I Think I Am On The Correct Path But Want To Be Sure...
Thanks Again For The Advise And Help...

Thanks! It's the most metal forming I've done. I was wishing I had an English wheel and a planishing hammer.
