whhirrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!
Thats all I hear when I try to start my truck! I'm pretty sure I did a root canal on my flywheel, I have a stock tall deck 427 bbc. I'm gonna price a flywheel, is there any info I need to ensure I get the correct one???

do a bit more checking .. other things can make the starter miss the teeth

well I'm pretty darn sure, it will turn over a bit before it makes an aweful scraping noise and then it will spin and the last time i tried cranking it, it had stopped where the teeth are missing and won't do anything now!
I just want to know if I need a certain diameter or a certain # of teeth or a certain bolt pattern or what.

i`m a ford guy .. plenty of chevy folks will let you know .. but i suspect all chevy V8 flywheels are the same ..

You'll need to know the clutch size so you can get the correct bolt pattern on the flywheel for the clutch. Not sure on the big blocks, but you might as well count the teeth on the starter ring and make sure you get the correct one.... Used to be able to just replace the starter ring on the flywheels.....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Standard or automatic? What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

Just count the teeth and order one then..... Make sure it's for a 427 and not a 454. The 454 units are external balance, 427's are internal balance.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Standard tooth count is 153. High performance (high compression) BBC were 168 count. Not very common especially with a TH350 behind them. Yours is more than likely the 153. Check your starter drive count also and make sure it is for your application. Internally balanced of course like Dave said. What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

Since it's a 427 it's going to only be one of two fylwheels(flywheel or flex plate). If the starter bolts are across and 1-short, 1-long starter bolts, it's a smller fylwheel.
If the starter bolts are diagonal and the same length, it's a larger fylwheel.(bolt was moved out of the way)
I don't remember the tooth counts, I think the small is 153, and the large is a 164, not positive.
The clutch size doesn't mater, it was to turn the higher compression motors to turn over easier.

welp I took care of the grinding! Turns out the motor and the aluminum housing where the sarter bolts up had somehow broken so the sarter would rotate even when bolting down causing it to back off and slip! Got a new starter and now it works great!
Merry Christmas ya'll
