Head Gaskets?
I'm new here, Hello everyone. I have put together a .060" 427. factory steel crank, a '78 454 block casting 361959, with 049 heads 2.19 and 188 valves, Trw 2308af pistons, and a Holley strip dominator intake. I'm worried about over heating, I'm using a felpro 1037 gasket and it only has one coolant hole in the back of the gasket but my block has two, so one is covered up. When I ordered these I give them my head and block casting years, told them I wanted stainless fire rings and this is what they came up with. This is my first "Big Block Endeavor", any information would be helpful.
Thanks, J. Mink

if your taking about the top holes them are steam holes that are about 7/8to 1 inch the gasket as about a 1/4 or so holes in it the front of the deck on the mark 4 block like you have all water go s to the back of the block so the gasket will be open in the back there is the bottom roll of holes in the deck that can be drilled out to 1/2 to5/8 for added cooling your block may have them or not .if you look at the photo the top roll on this race block have been closed down your block will have bigger holes so you are ok there. your block bottom row may or may not have all the 3 holes i drill them most of the time the back hole is stock and your block will look like this and your gasket will have this hole size may be different but if the holes is there it will work i have used the 1037 but i use the 1017 moreLast edited by pat mccarthy; 07-29-2008 at 06:31 AM.

Here is a picture of the hole that concerns me. Felpro says it's the right gasket for the numbers i gave them. What do you think. I thought about firing the engine and keep an eye on the temperature guage.block.jpg

Thanks, Pat for the information. I can't wait to get my Impala on the road and strip. I hope the car runs pretty good, I'm also going to have 250 to 300 hp hit on this engine. When this lets go I'd like to build a 565 or somthing.
Thanks, Jeff

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
