help!!! ticking noise from 427
I recently installed a 427 in a friends 66 vette. completely new motor. it runs great exept for a ticking noise i cant figure out. at first i thought it had to be valve adjustment. not so. with a stethescope the noise is loudest on #8 cyl right at the exhaust port. tried adjusting valves about 5 times. no change. changed lifters(hydraulic) still no change. inspected all rockers & pushrods.(stamped) all look good. removed head & replaced loose valve guides, still no change. I'm running out of ideas. any suggestions?
thanks, Jason. If its not blown, it sucks.

We always called it "manifold knock", never did find out what causes it. BBC's are bad for it, and 428 Fords too. Learn to ignore it or it'll drive ya crazy! My cousin spent thousands re-rebuilding a 428 and it never changed a thing. It was still doing it three years later when he traded it off.

I've been working on bbc engines for a long time now and I've never had this problem before. I'm not sure that I'll be able to convince my friend that its just a manifold noise. There has to be a fix. But thanks for the response.

hey jason that is your vette?? i pick up some big chief valve covers from you . is it a old 427 block or a 454 block if the old 66/67 block it needs a 080 groove cut in the back cam journal for more oil .drill out the front galley plugs with a .030 or so drill keeps the lifters from air lock that will cut down on the clicking to it do all my bbc even the solid rollers engines throws more oil on the chainLast edited by pat mccarthy; 10-28-2008 at 05:51 PM.

FIXED!!!! Turns out that the engine had closed chamber pistons with open chamber heads, alll the pistons were hitting the cylinder head right next to the exhaust valves. thanks for the help Pat, I owe you one.If its not blown, it sucks.

A man was watching his wife as she prepared to fry sausages in a pan. He noticed that before placing the sausages in the pan, she always cut off both ends, threw them away, and cooked only the middle...
