filter housinf 454
I took off the oil filter and see in the housing there is a small poppet valve. Is this the pressure relief valve? There was a small piece of gasket( or something ) and it seemed to holding it open. Could this cause the low oil pressure I have been having? There are 2 bolts that hold the housing in. If I take them out does the housing come out in one peice or are "things" going to fall out I can't get back in? Thanks for any help I'm under the car right now!

Yup, get the gasket junk out of there, take the two bolts out and it comes out. Clean it good and reinstall....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

that is a by pass it will just let trash run thru your engine and not thru the oil fitter there is steel washer that pressed in to the block side of the housing that your oil fitter bolts to under that will be your check spring and your flat disc that all should stay in one part. if that was hung open for any time it will let all trash run thru your engine so if you wipe a cam your oil fitter never did its job so all the iron run thru your engine.. it very well be could hurtLast edited by pat mccarthy; 11-30-2008 at 07:08 PM.

short block
Thanks all. As I continue to try and figure out the low oil pressure does anyone have a recommendation where to get a short block?

You're welcome Mike, glad it worked out for you. Roger, it's taken a few years but my inventory of excess parts has shrunk a fair bit from 1 1/2 garage stalls to about an eight by eight space. ...
