    New 454 engine!!!!

hi i just recently bought a Chevy 454 big block engine in hopes of putting it into a 70 chevelle.
the guy i bought it from inform me that the engine came out of a mid 80's dually truck. Besides that i really don't know anything else about the engine, i have tried doing some research with the engine casting number but to no avail. On the actual block i noticed it had 7.4 liter. I was hoping if you guys would be kind enough to give me a little bit more information on the actual engine & maybe some advice on how i could transformed it from a low hp high torque engine to a respectable muscle car engine. The engine casting number i
    believe is

    140154451

Thank you for your time, your patience, and your informatio

I think what you have is 1401544, which is a 454 used in 1975-87 trucks. It is a four bolt main and should be a good basis for building a stout street engine for your Chevelle. I always like the 70 body and the SS454 was definitely one of the really great muscle cars of of that era.

If nothing else, you can install the engine and drive it for a while and see if you like what it does in it's stock configuration. Easy changes would include intake manifold, carb, and headers. There are several bib block wizards on this site that will have a lot of great information if you're up to some serious building.

    Have fun,
    Glenn

I have the same casting number 454 originally from my uncle's 84 c-30 wrecker. Its a 2 bolt main, but mine does NOT have the peanut port heads...

It says "Hi-Perf Pass" on the back, where the bell mounts, but that doesn't mean anything.

I didn't go crazy with mine, it had recently been rebuilt. I added a 750 edel carb, Edelbrock Performer 2.0 dual plane intake and a Comp Cam 268H (with a double roller chain). Don't ask me how it runs, because the car is still on blocks, but my hopes are high. I am just looking for a nice cruiser with a little grunt for those traffic light holeshots...

I received alot of help here picking the cam, here's my discussion:

Summit is probably your best bet, but if you know what you want and have some patience you could probably find it on eBay eventually. I picked up my cam and lifters NIB for $100 on eBay.

Good luck with the project, keep us up to date and post some pics!

well i see your looking for 500HP that 268 comp cam and a intake will not get you that .i could help you i have built many bbc. i would like to know why you want 500hp. i have alot of guys come to my shop and ask for that .i guess that the water mark. it is not to hard to do but how much money do you have to spend for this build. for just banging a round on the street you want TQ more then HP. i can build a 468 or a 496 that will make that chevelle run like it,s ass was on fire .i just do not assemble engine i build and machine engines. i make them work and for fit finsh and to size were a guy can only assemble what they get back from the machine shop. your engine will only be as good as your machine shop work . i am my machine shop .you need to find someone that cares what they put out the door .that is getting harder to find

to be honest with you ive just always been the type of guy who saved up a little more and got nike's instead of the addidas, my philosophy of life has always been it pays to be patient & not to settle for less then you really want. i dont know why i want 500 ponys, all i know is since i was 12 ive dreamed of having my own muscle car and it was gunna be a 500hp muscle car,i dont want a dragster or racer nothing wild like that, i just want to be able to enjoy the wonderful california summer drive to beach, i dont know mutch about how a engine works but i know if i dont go all the way the first time i am just going to regret it and wish that i had.
im not in a rush im planning on buying piece by piece untill i have a respectable engine, so im guessing maybe 2 or 3 thousand is around my budgit, but if i have to spend a little bit more to be happen then so be it.

hey pat i have no idea why but i posted a response as soon as you posted your message, but it never came up. so ill make my long answer into a short one, since my dad brought home his 68 chevelle home when i was 10 or 11 i promised myself that as soon i was able to get one i would, im 25 now so for about last 15 years ive been painting a picture of a chevelle in my head, and thats to have 500 ponys underneath my hood, i know if i just dont go all out right now ill regret it, and doing right now why the motor out i guess would be the cost effective way of doing it.

the point i was trying to make is if you are just driving this car around TQ is what will get it moving after that your looking at hp so if geared rigth you can work with TQ not the hp and for driving around you will have more use for off idle TQ shooting for just HP is not good if the engine is never going past 6500 rpms on the street .i would cam and gear of max TQ and not worry about the hp
