which in your opinion would be the better route to 496 keeping in mind im supporting a family of 3 at $10.75/hr... a cheap crank and cheap pistons, or a pre-balanced kit, im still undecided on this, just want to put a price tag on something that will work before i rule it out of budget

i will be taking the block into the machine shop soon, they said they will hit my desired compression ratio, so with the roller cam you told me about, what would be a good compression ratio to tell them i want?

well not to be smart a$$ how can they do that ? with out knowing what you have ?? first get the block O deck .find out what the voume of the dish is in CC and CCs the heads if you use a 1037 felpro heads gasket it is 9.7cc you add all up then cut the heads to the CC you want. but first you need to know were your are at now .you just can not cut 100 off the deck of the heads they will be junk. or the deck of the block pistons will hang out of the deck. there will be a point were your only going to get close .you may not get what you want for CR less your buying all new stuff .i was thinking we talk about this ? i told you that cam would work with your stuff the way it is now but getting the block deckO deck and milling the heads is not going to hurt only help with sealing it up AND BUILD A BETTER ENGINE .them heads need a trim anyways GO BACK AND READ POST 36.13.7 AND YOUR STILL GOING TO HAVE TO DO THE CCs THING .. THIS IS YOUR HOME WORK... AS WELL AS WORK OUT THE CH OF THE PISTON WORKING OFF A STOCK ROD 6.135 + 1/2 4.000 CRANK = 2.000 SO ADD THAT UP= 8.135 + YOUR PISTON CH THAT WILL GIVE THEM THE DECK NUMBER TO CUT THE DECK TO. IF THEY CAN NOT DO THIS THEN I WOULD NOT LET THEN CUT ANY THING. BUT IT GOOD FOR YOU TO WORK ALL THIS OUT AND THEN YOU KNOW AND HAVE NUMBERS TO SHOOT FOR .I CAN NOT HELP YOU HEAR I DO NOT HAVE YOUR PISTONS OR CC ON THEM OR THE CH OF THE PISTON OR THE HEAD CC GET ME THAT ,AND I CAN HELPLast edited by pat mccarthy; 07-29-2009 at 06:27 PM. i cant imagine it would be very cheap to send 2 70lb heads halfway across the country and back...but i have been doing fairly well selling my speed parts from my 350 to co-workers to help fund this project, broke the connecting rod in that one and have 2 people fighting over parts, one wants everything left, the other just wants the cam&lifters and head, either way it ought to bring in enough for the intake and q-jet and cover a little of the decking
i have read alot about reconditioning the stock rods by grinding the flash and casting lines off, would you condone this, on one hand i can see this helping by reducing stress points, but seems to me removing metal would further weaken themLast edited by co68956; 08-01-2009 at 08:46 PM.

alot of times we would find a good set of used rods 3/8 rods blast them recon the rods with rod bolts. with the sps bolts or arp bolts and call it good .i had the some of the 7/16 gm rods but in alot of mild builds you do not need them . as for working the beam i use a drum sander start at 6o grit to 80 to 180 on the beams .you may have to pick thru more them one set to find a set of 8 that can be used .the rod can have some off set when stamp and to get the stamping marks out you can get very thin on the beam so yes you can turn the rods to junk and when done you can play hell getting a weight match. a stock gm rod can take over 450+ hp with some to no work on them . any time you can take a casting marks or forging mark s out of any thing it help s with any stress points as long as it there to take off.. and helps to check for cracks .you need to find a good set sand the beams re work them get them shot peened and re built and much more but for the money and time you can buy a better new rod . for the price just to buy the bolts and re build a set of use rods there s not much more to buy new and i do not used many stock rod builds on stroker builds or any big hp builds . if you add you time them your past that priceLast edited by pat mccarthy; 08-02-2009 at 12:41 AM.
