Roller cam questions ???
I have been reading BigBlockBird's post on Thrust Buttons with much interest as I will be using a roller cam. I didnt want to hijack his thread so I hope BigBlockBird has all his questions answered and he can educate me.
Place a nylon thrust button on the center of the cam gear and put on the cover. Sounds simple but will it stay centered long enough to get the cover on? How do I know it is the correct size with a stock cover? Is a nylon button better than a roller for street application?
A thrust ring goes behind the cam timing gear. Will it fit with no machining?
A new fuel pump push rod and distributor gear will finish off the project - right? Anything else? New cam and new lifters with push rods to fit.
Can you use used lifters? Does any one have some for sale?
Is a roller worth the double $$ investment over a flat hydraulic lifter? Easier startup concerns. I have wiped a lifter on startup before and do not want to go through that again. Can I use a solid roller with stock rockers? Solid roller lifters are cheaper and you see them available used more than hydraulic roller lifters. More maintenance but we all make an excuse to get back under the hood for one reason or another.
Ha ha lol so many questions and so little time.
Thanks for the response.

well i said what buttons i used if you need to cut them down then a solid button are ez to work with all you need is a hack saw and file if you have no lathe .the button fits in the top gear and a lock plate holds it in.some times you may have to machine top gear or bottom so the chain is running straight.this from time to time i have to fix this.if iron core roller cam stock pump rod and dist gear will work. push rods are not the same you need to buy push rods for make of lifters. erson cam lifters are not going to use the same as comp cam . yes you can use a set of used roller lifters .yes you can use steel stamp rockers if they are long slots. less cam is a small cam. you can and i have used solid roller s on the street they are abit loud but your not going to have to lash them all the time less some thing wearing out. i put roller cams in BBC only you can do what ever you want .if you go on line most of this or call them and they will tell you all you need to know .as well on here are many post on here that i posted onIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

For some reason the hole in Comp cams lock plate is way bigger them the small diameter of thier button. I suppose if the button got loose enough in the gear it could walk off center. Maybe thats what mine did.

Thanks Pat, Your pictures look like the right way to do it. I used a aluminum button on the last big block I put together. It fit snug in lock plate. That one had a tin front cover and flat tappet cam. This ones got a aluminum cover and a roller cam. I,m going to use a roller button like you said.
