454 build
Hey guys, i have a 79 454 out of a suburban(4 bolt, stock bore, 125000 miles), I'm going to build it for my 78 Chevy short bed for street and occasional strip usage. My goal is at least 500hp, would like to be closer to 600hp range but my budget isn't unlimited. I've build a few sbc's, this will be my first BB. I was wondering if anybody had an easy and inexpensive recipe for me to achieve my goal and tear up Woodward ave.:
My plan was a balanced rotating assembly from scat or eagle for a 496,
A big hyd roller cam set from comp or edelbrock,
Not sure on heads.. might have to go cast iron for budget purposes
If anybody has any tips or ideas.. you know what to do
(i know this probably isn't the first post for a BB build but i was tired of searching) THANKS!!

heads .roller cam . lifters .springs . crank mass pistons . rods . crank. all new parts? thats not much $$ .you can dump $600 in reworking stock heads thats machine work valves and roller spring s and still need head casting add $150.a set of iron eagles loaded are $1530 . so your looking at hyper pistons . I beam rods .cast steel crank $950. roller cam and lifters $580 then hot tank block. prep for 4.250 crank block .tru deck block bore with deck plates. with 4340steel crank H beam rods. srp pistons ring .bearings . $1800Last edited by pat mccarthy; 01-23-2010 at 07:21 AM.

Alright thanks for the input, now i have one more question concerning bb iron heads, like i said i have a 79 454 with stock truck heads.. so what would be a good set of iron heads to keep an eye out for?
I just need some decent cheap heads to get me through this summer until i can save up for some nice TFS or brodix. Thanks

I have a set of 049 heads off my 454 BUT it is a 2 bolt main..
Any problems with a 2 bolt main pushing 600hp?
And how much does it usually cost to get a set of 049 heads with 2.19-1.88 valves and some porting and bowl work? thanks

no two bolts are ok .hard to say on heads what they need. you should go to your machine shop . i get $ 30 hot tank and mag $ 70 mill heads 140 valve job 4 angle on intake and full radius + one angle on EX and go in and bowl them out has well $125 .then its up to you for guilds iron is $128 or mag bronze as bronze is more money but a better guild for hp i feel . then cutting for PC seals and spring set$60 up so it not hard to put 600. in them or moreLast edited by pat mccarthy; 01-25-2010 at 11:47 AM.
