I have a 67 camaro powered by a 427 with 11:1 compression and large oval port heads. At the present time it has a flat tappet cam but with the concerns of today’s oil I would like to replace it with a solid or hyd roller. The car is a weekend car with 3:73 rear end gears, four speed Trans and power brakes. The car is also equipped with a set of Doug's 2" headers coupled to a 21/2’ flow master exhaust, a 750 speed demon carb on an Edelbrock RPM manifold. Any suggestions would be of great help.

Pat McCarthy is the resident BBC expert here, but until he shows up, I'll take a shot at it just for grins. I have to assume that if you're runnin' pump gas, your present cam is probably closin' the intake valve at around 49 degrees ABDC and usin' a 0.050" duration of about 246 degrees.

To use a solid roller and maintain approximately the same characteristics, I might use a cam such as the Crane 138601. It closes the intake at 48 with 246/254 degrees @0.050", ground on 110 LSA.

heres the cam that works good hyd roller 621/621 @050 238/246 lc108 or you could go to 621/621 @050.246/254 lc108 but you need more gear and stall .solid roller you i would want to stay with246/254 629/629 cl108 if you have more stall then go up on dur 254/260 .629/629 cl108

The car is a 4 speed manual trans, would the 254/260 .269/629 cl108 work ok with the 373 gear? Isky cam with red zone lifters? I would like to run the stock valve covers with roller rockers, I have done this before using Crane gold rockers, I had to remove the drippers from the valve covers and use a thicker gasket. Is there a brand of roller rockers that fit better or are they all about the same?

Wouldn't an 850 be a better choice of carbs?

i just did two 496 engines and used crane golds with stock covers and 5/16 thick gaskets they fit but the only ones that may fit better would be the crower steel rollers or comps. i did a 396 with a stick and the same cam but on a 112 cl and i do have one fresh regrind crane with them numbers and a new 4/7 swap cam with both on steel cores. i would run the hyd roller on the street before the solid roller less your drag racing it or going very hi on rpms past 6500. i do go solid on some builds were a guy will not spend the money on hyd rollers lifters or bigger cams .but if your using red lines you just throwed the price of lifters out the window fine lifters but you can buy a hyd roller kit for the red line price and never hear as much lifter lash sound and not having to set them if you do not like this.that why i like to build the hyd rollers for street and mild use and have been moving away from solids lifters. save the solid roller stuff for the balls out stuff
