BBC Distributor
My Dad's got a new to him motor home ('85 w/24k on the odometer) with a 454 BBC in it with an HEI dizzy. The vacuum advance can has the hose nipple rusted off. He's been told that the vacuum advance can has to be matched to the distributor. WTF, anyone ever heard of the distributor and vacuum advance can having to be a matched pair. Granted it's in a Winnabego but, I have never heard of that. I'm telling him to go get an adjustable vacuum advance unit and stab it in there, fine tune it a bit, and should be good to go. Can't imagine for the life of me what would be different? The HEI part number stamped is 11033765c1 and the vacuum advance is 68210. From what I gather the dizzy is '85 454, March 1st, C and K series. Just a truck motor. ????????

Anything for a motor home will probably be four prices at a dealer. I might be tempted to install a Crane adjustable vacuum can and vacuum timing limiter plate....The 99600 is adjustable for the RATE at which vacuum is applied to the advance function....

The 99619 is adjustable for the AMOUNT of vacuum applied to the advance function....

Vacuum advance cans come in a staggering array of different characteristics. Some more of less vacuum, others more or less degrees of timing. I think this is what he meant to match the engine and the work load it will be doing. My little 327 with a big cam and heavy truck, I had to tune the ignition so that the vacuum would retard alot under heavy load (lo vac). Once you get it it is a beautiful thing.
Just go to the local auto parts store and they can fix him up. Enjoy!

I'm gonna call around for him. I'm willing to bet an adjustable gets the nod in the long run, as the original part is no longer (so he has been told) available. I will find out if the arm has any info stamped on it. I also doubt, that with very little tuning the adjustable can would work just fine. My weekend project.

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
