Not sure on the chevelle but on some Chry you could take the tie rod down to get enough room

Hey Green 67...Unbolt the idler arm and let the center link of the steering drop down some.. Un bolt the exhaust pipes and let em swing..Ya need to jack the engine up to the point the distributer is against the firewall..So loosen the cap so it don't get broke...Remove the fan to keep it from screwing up the shroud if there is one and or the radiator...Its easier to pull the engine anyways.......Yank it ..Yank it good. ......Jerry Lee could have said.."Theres a whole lot of yanking going on".... ......

Just pull the engine and save yourself all the hassle.

Hey, I'm new on this board but I just went through the same problem with my chevelle, oil pump locked up.

Pull the engine if you have a hoist...

If not unbolt your tranny and slide it backwards. You can then jack the engine up high enough so that you can get the oil pan to clear the flywheel and the front crossmember. You need to jack the engine up about 5 to 6 inches in order to get the pan off. You'll need two floor jacks, several pieces of 2x4 and lots of elbow grease.... don't over torque your pan bolts too!!! Good Luck.
