newbie with a 402
Well i'm brand new to the forum thing and the Big Block too. I recently bought an 85 chevy stepside with a 402 BBC. Now the guy i bought it from said it's a straight 402 and not a 396 bored out. I havent a clue about it. He also said the tranny is a 700R and it has a posi rear end. Thats about all i know about it. Anything anyone can say would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hello, 85SuperChev, I have the Chevy by the numbers books. If you give me any casting numbers from your block, heads, or what not, I can give you the year and model vehicle it came from. I have a 70 402 in my 68 SS Camaro. Well, it isn't in there as we speak, but, it is all over the garage and the car is an empty shell. If you wish I'll run the numbers if you post them here. My books only run, 55 thru 75 so those are the only years I can assist you with. From what my book reads, the 402 was only produced for 3 years 1970 to 1972. Sorry can't help you with the tranny or rear end, but they all have casting numbers, and you can ask here, or "google" them and I am sure you'll get an answer!

Well, like Pat says Hardly any real difference between those 2 but if he said u have a straight 402, I am willing to bet he meant a 1974-72 block, best way is to look at the engine stamped code that is on the end of the block. on the pad just under the alternator, assuming that is the passenger side of the truck. My guess you will find a CLB code motor

Thanks guys for the info... i recently came across some more info on the truck and its got an edelbrock 750 carb on it and apparently has a 3/4 cam set up in it also. Has a 700R tranny in it with a shift kit. Im gonna get the numbers off the block next time i get under it and see what it says and post it on here.

he just meant it came from the factory as a 402, which is the same engine as the 396 but with .030 bigger bores. He must have just meant it wasn't torn down and bored later on. I have the same motor.

T1012CTB decodes as follows:
T=Tonawanda Plant
01= January
12= Twelve
CTB= 1972, 396 and 400 (LS-3)"Where the people fear the government you have tyranny. Where the government fears the people you have liberty." John Basil Barnhil
Thank you Roger. .
