new to big block world
im new to the big block world and not real sure whats going on. first off ive got a 454 with what ive figured to be the peanut port heads. numbers 246236. with a cast crank that needs turnt and 2 piston rods/pistons. other than that its all in good shape.
what im looking for: going in a mud truck most likely open headders and im lookin to put the comp camps extreme energy 4x4 hydraulic flat tapped cam kit in it.
pushing as much power as i can without race gas (93 is fine)
my worrys:runin flat tops or slight dome's.. cast crank even worth turning down or is it gona leave me right back in teh garage?
stock rods worth keeping?
and to the main one.. my current heads worth not throwing in scrap? cam range is 1000-5000 or 1400-5400
was told their good for torque but anything over 4000 rpm they are worthless.. so.. whats the word guys?
another little question leading off to my newbness in big block world..
2 bolt main/4 bolt main... any worry or whats up with that.. mines 2 bolt btw.

built many cast cranks two bolt blocks that were way over 450HP have many two bolt blocks that seen alot of hp over many years of hard use. re build the rods with arp bolts or scat I beam rods and that about all you would needIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

since you have a bad crank and 2 bad rods/pistons might be the time to step up to 4.250 crank---just did one and it was right at 10 lbs lighter than a forged steel one--went in a 2 bolt block and for a early cheville?? original 396 getting sealed up in a Scribner box and shelved

that not hard how much money do you have to spend on heads could be any thing from warmed over 781/049 or dart .afr ????$$$$$ yep i done just one or two 496 funny thing is the guys leave them 396 badges on the car.... there going to be a very big engine in a truck he will have to lock the hood down i think he may play it off as a 350 with a leaky EX and in need of a tune upLast edited by pat mccarthy; 06-13-2011 at 08:09 PM.

lol my trucks already pretty well known for a screamer with its poor lil ole 350. stock bore, forged alum full floater flat tops, balanced, duel cammel back heads with port n polish heads slightly shaved preditor carb and procomp ignition set. runin 456 gears with 40" boggers itll run first 2nd and 3rd in 4 low
but damnit i want 4 hi!! hehehe
tryin to use what heads i got if itll work for my rpm range. if not i guess its time to go diggin for some and hope i dont get jipped

midland were MICH ? if so.. i know some guy s... i machine bbc s for some guys i am sure you know them .. if its midland mi your going past the rpm range of the small port heads .same with a hyd cam your at 5000 more then under it ? for valve train is a big deal .hyd cams are not the best for mud trucks rpm moves way to fast for valve train control .you can get in valve float as valve train weight adds up .go solid roller or solid flat lifter hi lube .if you can keep rpm down and wheel speed up a bigger engine would help like a 496 you could lower the rpm abit and may get away with hyd cam but i never seen any thing take a beating like mud engines take. so i would build it like its going to see 7000+ rpm s valve train and bottom end clerance oil control. if your in mich PM me i can get headsLast edited by pat mccarthy; 06-14-2011 at 05:19 AM.

the cam im runin in small block is only good to 5400 and the one i was after for bigblock is either 5000 or 5400 so im not too worried about floating the valves.
ive always herd u gota continuisly adjust solid lifters.. any truth to that idk. tryin to keep things as maintenance free as possible but enough to do what i want

well valve float can happen at 5000 and if you shift at 5000 you may be way over 5500 .so i make this post short i have to mow the grass hyd flat lifter cam suck for hard use and roller cam s are good for what your doing if your going after it hard... that bull shit lash holds good if some thing as wearing or bending then your going to be playing with lash just before it blows upIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Right on, another mud guy. I was thinking about using one of those comp extreme 4x4 cams in my 461, only issue is I need 15" of vacuum in my class. my latest engine is a .030 454 with 215 heads, .219 valves and flat top trw's. I am running a melling torque cam in it, same cam that I had last season on a stock motor with smaller valves and I had a hard time getting more than 4800rpm out of it. you must be running in shallow pits to run 40's on a small block, I run 35"boggers with 5.13 gears and I still need low range.

not sure exactly how much vacuum they put out but on my last 355 the highest rpm range jegs carried in the extreme 4x4 had enough vacuum to run brake booster and vacuum advance without a problem.
my mud ranges from open fields to hood deep to i never should have even thoght about going there lol

I checked comps site and the highest range bbc xtreme 4x4 cam runs 234/244 duration at .050 and, 111degree lsa and a 107 intake centerline. I am thinking about trying out this cam possibly with rhoads lifters. I wonder if it would make anywhere near 15" of vac.

i love my extreme 4x4 cam. kinda scared me at first.. did the break in according to warranty spec and started playin around the yard just getting some time on it and i thought i got jipped.. ran like a v6 on 2 cylinders for a while and progressivly got better.. but now that shes good and broke in.. WOAH BABY
