Another 454 question
Was curious what would anyone recomend as a maximum stroker kit and bore for a 1974 454 2-bolt motor with 781 heads with an automatic trans and ford 9" 350-1 and how much horse /tork could you expect and would there be big gains with aluminum heads just checking options with so many kits on the market.

I just balanced a 4.250 scat forged steel crank this afternoon---its fo a 540 dart block-- balanced fully internal at a bob weight of 2302 grams--
I have run standard bbc as far out as .125 over and if 2 bolt block would at least use studs for the mains

i built the mark four 454 two bolt with a 4.320 bore with a 4.375 crank with a 6.385. rod .i done many.many 4.250 cranks from 496 to 568 i have 4 going on right now two scat cast steel cranks with Gm thumb rods with ARP bolts. and two 4340 scat cranks with 6.385 I beam rods will be going for sale soon .two bolt mains can hold alot of power . i do not buy kits .i make up kits of parts i like to use. how much power ?? thats a very open question no limit on money or CR ? start getting past 700+hp then the parts change for better pistons and rods and would be looking to stud the main and 4 bolt caps last week i did this 3 plugsLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-13-2012 at 06:43 PM.

yes money is a factor but when you can buy a dart short block and put a pair of dart heads on it between $7000-$9000 with decent size with lots of power this motor would be going in a 2500 pound streetrod but if the car was ever sold it still would provide enough power for a hevy car or truck I thought 600-700 horse sounded cool what started all this was an ad for a new 598" dart short block for $4700 all I could think was the power and cost compared to what I was able to do with my stock 2-bolt as stated earlier Im just curious

well i can tell you the stock bbc has been used in many builds and not just buy me i can get all the dart stuff and used alot of it .but i like building the stock stuff with a 4.250 or 4.375 just for fun . when you get past $5000. in head casting and just valves . get past 4500 just for a bare alum block some of the fun wears off i machined built many hi 500s to 632 bbc just more money the 589 is really nothing new you can put a 4.500 crank in a stock 9.800 GM block if you want to as for street rods i sold my 548 14to8 748 solid roller street engine to a guy with a 2500. street rod i put it in for him car was more then one hand fullLast edited by pat mccarthy; 02-16-2012 at 04:54 PM.
