What head gasket to use?
Hey guys, here's the deal. Doing my first big block rebuild. 454 cu.in. bored 0.040 over. Block casting number 14015445. Head casting number 14092360. This engine is going to be used in it's original application, a k3500 4x4 work truck. My question is what head gasket. The block has 2 water passages in the rear while the heads have 2 water passages front and rear. There are a number of options. Some have 1 cutout front and rear some two. All help is greatly appreciated.PEACE, BUD

the heads are open on both ends so there is no right to left head . older blocks feed heads threw back of block only . any head gasket from 65to 89 will work try to stay with a smaller bore gasket as some race gasket have a fire ring for big bore 4.540+engines. i would use a fel pro 8180pt2 for stock and mild use .race fel pro 1037 bore 4.370 this gasket may need lower holes added to block deck .Last edited by pat mccarthy; 07-16-2012 at 05:33 PM.

Hey Pat, thanks for the quick reply. I was hoping you would see this. Also for your info on sealing the bolt holes. I did a search and found your procedure. Draining cleaning and drying completely. Question, rv or teflon?PEACE, BUD

teflon past or permatex non drying like aviation i used this stuff for 30 years on wet head bolts always done the job .with teflon you may need to back down on max TQ on head bolts less ARP head bolts. stock or cheaper bolts you can hour glass them with teflon. i go no more then 70 tq if teflon pastLast edited by pat mccarthy; 07-16-2012 at 08:31 PM.
