Gen V 454 Head Help
Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum. I recent bought a Gen V 454. I did some reading and found that the Gen IV head won't work on my block unless I have special head gaskets which I already bought. What would be a good factory head I can use to bump the horsepower up to about 400?Last edited by Orlando87Chevy; 08-05-2012 at 07:46 PM.

the mark 5/6 heads will work on the older 454 mark 4 block blocks s need the lower row of holes in the deck drilled some times there are one or two per side in the deck .there needs to be 3 just like the head gasket has .if a flepro race gasket like a 1037 it covered what on that small paper with head gaskets not many read.this needs to be done on the deck of block .there is many post on this on here. see this block in photo your deck needs the 3 holes by low set of head bolt holes in deck or your cooling may not work very good .used head gaskets to lay out holes needed to be drilled 1/2 hole is ok i start with a center punch then step drill up to 1/2Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

thats easy the mark 4 heads GM heads are not a good fit on a mark 5or 6 block . after market heads will work on both engines as they added metal to seal the heads were stock mark 4 heads leak on a 5/6 block its not just head gaskets it is the lack of metal were it needs to seal near the intake valley just about any head made for a bbc will get you 400hp with some workLast edited by pat mccarthy; 08-05-2012 at 08:33 PM.
