Crankshaft stripped 454 can I tap larger?

Long story but my local engine shop who rebuilt my 454 neglected to check the snout of my crank and when I went to install the harmonic balancer, there were no threads in the crank. I shined a flashlight in there and there are little to nothing left.

Can someone with experience in this area tell me what I should do.

The hole oem is 1/2-20. Would you suggest a threaded insert heli-coil, or tap to a 9/16-18.

    thanks for any help

Pat thanks for the reply. Thats what I was thinking also, but another question now. If I go to 9/16, I cant use my balancer install tool. How do I get the balancer on smooth without beating it on.

Use a long bolt, then a shorter bolt, follow up with the final bolt.

Else use a piece of all thread with a nut and two washers
    .

well i was going to say this not the best way as some 454 dampers have alot of press may times you wast time bending washer .tool works much better as it has a thrust washers try to used it if your going to do this bolt long short bolt deal. wipe crank nose with some oil or a small dab of moly lube . before you put the damper washer on i seal the key way with RTV

I had to do a little TIG on my install tool but all worked well. Now, should the end of the crank be even with the front of the balancer? Or how far in?
