BBC crankshaft flywheel pin
Hi guys,
Long time since I posted on here, I've been working on the 540 again lately....
I have a problem that started awhile back, and I need some advice.
I tried to install a pin into the end of the crankshaft to help align the flywheel to the end of the crank. What happened is the pin wasn't long enough and it got pressed into the crank snout end when I installed the flywheel and now I can not get it out.
My question is: should I leave this pin in and forget about it or remove the crank from the engine and get it removed and then install a longer pin. Is this pin even needed, or are the 6 flywheel bolts sufficient. I am expecting 650-700 horsepower and a shit load of torque. BTW it is a 1-pc seal crankshaft.
Thx so much,
Ed

hell theres many engines i have done past 700.hp with no pin you will not shear 6 grade 8 bolts . if the pin is sticking out some it will still do the job of helping aline the fly wheel . if you just can not live with the way it is you can center up on the pin drill and tap it for a 5/16 or 3/8 fine bolt then i thread it on a big slide hammer i have it will come out . i do this on engine block bell dowle pins all the timeIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Thx for your reply Pat.
I like your idea of drilling and tapping the pin...
I can not drill the pin the way it is now, it is case hardened. What I tried to do was to weld a rod onto it and pull it out....didn't work.
I think my next move is to try and grind the surface of the pin down with a die grinder and some sort of small grinding tool, and then drill it.
The pin is flush with the crank snout. If I would have used a longer pin, this never would have happened

leave it a lone you will end up with a mess if is case hard it can be drilled and tapped .the stock pins were never threw hard pins . if you feel it must come out i drilled pins easy out and other busted junk out of holes with a carbide ball mill on the mill that end of the crank is called the hub end. you get me mixed up every time you call it the snout it the wrong end of the pig. i would not play with it less you have a mill to do the job right ... like i said i know of 3 engine off the top of my head that are past 1000hp with out Nos and no pin in the hub that i built . when welding on that pin make sure you did not put a magnetic charge threw the crank i hope the engine is not together were you hook the ground can pfuck up the bearing s or hot welding steel flying around getting on the crank jounals or seal face good luckIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Thx. I am undecided at this time what I am going to do with it. My overall feeling is I would like to get that f*cking pin out.
