454 block or...
Bought a 454 that ate the cam, it's basically an LS7 open chamber with 7040PA pistons. Pulled it apart and everything looks new except #6 cylinder is pitted. So I need to have it bored, buy new pistons, have it balanced and so on.
Have a set of 0.30 over 427 pistons and rods out of another blown up engine I bought but it needs a crank.
So I can do one of three things. See if the cylinder will clean up at 0.30 over and buy a forged 427 crank, fix the 454. Or I can try to find a 4 bolt block that's good at standard bore and put the 454 innards in it. I've looked a little and 4 bolt standard blocks are scarce.
What would you do?

What power range are you looking for?
2 bolt main can do around 500 hp.
8-900 4 bolt main. Pat can give more precise info on that.
Personally I would go 4 bolt main but thats MY opinion.

depends on how bad the pitting is--maybe if THAT cylinder would clean up at .030 you could just put ONE piston in one cylinder--or sleeve it to stock bore---
how much wear is on the other cylinders???maybe .030/etc on all and a new set of pistons-----if your 454 crank is good , then the way to go is fix it and forget the 427 stuff--besides a crank you would need a flywheel and front dampner for the external balance
the blocks used on those ls7 were generally good for up to 1/8 overbore----------and off the shelve pistons are generally available in 020/030/060/100/125

I’ve often wondered about boring only one cylinder if the others are ok, but I’ve never heard of it being done. Would it cause a balance or vibration problem? It doesn’t seem like .030 or even more would cause a problem. What are the pros and cons of this fix for a guy on an extreme budget? Seems to me it would work fine.

i built a 289 many years ago from junkyard parts and the stuff was so worn that the engine had to be bored to fit each piston .. and i had to custom fit the rings to each piston .. ran it hard for many years ..iv`e used up all my sick days at work .. can i call in dead ?

while talking 454's will a 2000 454 make a good base to start with ? Can you still bore them .060 with out overheating problems?

You don't need the 4 bolt block for what your building, from what i have read, the 2 bolt main block is good to 500hpLast edited by jimbos56; 05-05-2014 at 07:42 PM.
Great to see your new post, Mike, and great to see CHR up and running again after several days of the Hmmm, can't reach this page.... Also good that you found an easy solution to your storage/access...
