piston question
Building a bbc for my dodge. Going with a 060 454, hyd. roller. Shooting for 9.5 or 10 to 1 comp. I'm using 781 round port heads. What size dome do I need to get that comp ratio? I know chevy heads vary but I was thinking these heads have 122 chambers, may be wrong on that. Any recommendations? Heads will have some bowl and intake port work and they done have 2.19 and 1.88 valves.

all the 781 i used were less then 122cc on chamber you say bowl works been done that will not play with chamber size for cc less they have been reworked .you did not say what amount of money you want to spend so a budget i lke speedpro581cp10.2 with a 118 cc head or Icon piston 1c779/ktd 9.5 with a 119 cc head dome .190 -18cc 2618 alloy . or ICON Piston FHR 1c9919/'ktm 9.6 with119cc head a 200 dome -18.3cc alloy 4032 .many other brans i use mahle .SRP .wiseco .others and up to 800 a set. so the ones listed are the best for value . when i machine and build a bbc or any engine i start were head cc is at or when machine work is all done make it to the cc i need . were piston is in the block adds to were you could be for CR .the block could been deck ? need to know were the deck is . the block can be off i check and deck with a BHJ tru-deck plate on engine and mill to deck height i use a FeL 1017-1 is 10.5 cc fire ring 4.540 or the Fel 1037 is 9.7 cc . watch the 1037 part number as it needs added 1/2 to 5/8 water holes drill the deck of the older mark 4 blocks if boosted then cometic comc5816-040 fire ring 4.320Last edited by pat mccarthy; 12-24-2014 at 04:11 PM.

This is going to be a street budget engine. I was going to have the block decked and the heads have had a clean up cut on them. I had a real nice set of KB pistons, 030, but I can't find a standard bore block. Bought 3 454's, 1- cracked cyl, already 030, sleeved but still leaked when pressure cked. 2- 060 with rust in cyls, needs 010 to clean it up, 3- 030, wear in cyls, but did have a set of stk 781 heads.

most of the time i buy only std bore blocks doing a 030 489 . there not to hard to find i still have 3 454 blocks left that will go 030 . i do not much care for the KB hyper piston s . but i like the ICON line up use theFHR 4032 alloy cost is about the same cost as the KB far better piston made at the same place for hyper i use speed prosIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

I found a wisco piston that is not to bad on price. Also, found a 060 over Probe, with rings for $400. 454's, at least the IV, 2 piece seal are getting scarce around here. Std bore blocks seem impossible to find. I've been doing a little figuring on this, $400 pistons, $200 to get stk rods done with arp bolts, plus doing a crank with bearings, is going to be around $900. What do you think about some of the kits offered now. I have found 496 kits for a $1000 with cast Scat crank, I beam rods, and a decent piston. Also what are your thoughts on externally balanced? Most kits claim to be balanced, Skip White has them for $1175, balanced with flywheel and balancer. This eng won't see over 6500. All my racing stuff was internal, and used Callies, and stuff like that. I put a forged Eagle set up in my 434 in my chevelle but that's $2000. This is a budget hot rod, but for a couple hundred dollars difference I'd go 496 if it come to that.

10 bucks a rod and 60 for bolts the rebuild rods is what i get so yep i build more 489/'498 bbc and some 511s then 454s so yes if you used hyper pistons and a cast crank for a 6.135 rod as most hyper speed pros use the stock rod and the cast steel scat crank cut for the stock rod and can get it in cast steel for internal but many times you have to put heavy metal in them. most guys are looking at this point to be making more power and RPM were i just go forged steel crank and internal at this point the forged crank forged 2618 pistons and longer rods 6.385 is the way for them to go . in your case you will not see any real gain in the internal balance job or longer rod just added cost in your build ..every one makes a 4340 crank to go internal with the 6.385 rod but you will move up on crank cost as it will be 4340 or 4130 and the longer rod with a forged piston that most all the time moves up to the 1/16 1/16 3/16 or 1.5/1.5 and 3mm ring pack so the cost can go up just in ring set can cost 60+ over 5/64 in the icon FHR forged set keep some cost down with stock ring set and now 1.5 rings and 3mm oil set is stander way to go . then there is the added cost in H bearings that you must us in the 4340 forged cranks. as for skip white . i buy all thru pbm/epw. motor state . comp. jomar . crower .Pep. perfit. Erson. as dealer or engine builder cost . there no need for me to deal with him as i sell as well . i balance all my builds. many kits are sold are just a mass balance job . for parts and build s in my shop is a 632. 511.489. 498.598.454.548 .i use parts i like and know work the best in each build But every job is not the same in HP or rpm and budget so cost and parts line up is not the same all have Erson cams in them shelf or custom to my spec.s . piston are icons . JE. wiseco.mahle.speed pro. just to give you a idea. i am not lock in to one brand but use the pistons i see fit for the build at handLast edited by pat mccarthy; 12-26-2014 at 06:29 PM.
