700 CFM double pump Holley enough for 396?
Hello all,
I'm getting close to engine assembly time. I have a Holley 700 double pump 4150 mechanical secondary carb. Have had it for years. It was great on a hot 350 (jetted way down). Now I'm building a 396. I'm wondering if this is enough carb or if I need to explore something larger. Engine details:
396, 30 over
10 to 1 flat tops
Cam: Howards CL123315-08
----Advertised duration 280/280
-----0.050" duration 227/227
-----Valve lift 0.555" / 0.555"
Intake: Weiand Stealth
Heads: AFR Magnum 265CC Oval Port
Other details: 2500 RPM stall, 355 gears.

Welcome to CHR!
Sounds like you’ve got a good build going. I don’t think your 700 is large enough.
If it were mine – I’d put a stage 3 Quadrajet:

This carburetor would require an adaptor to run on the Weiand Stealth (which I like too) i.e., an Edelbrock 2693 which would raise you up another ¾ inch.

If you stay with a square bore, the Holley Street Avenger gets good marks:

Others will chime in I’m sure.

Thanks for the responses.
I need to go do some reading on quadrajets. I've just done a small amount of browsing and I see all sorts of people saying QJ over Holley.
While I'm not trying to build the fastest street car in America, I'm not concerned about gas mileage. This will not be a daily driver. It will be a cruiser. I'm wanting every ounce of performance out of it I can get.
