427 Tall deck build up
Can anyone help.
I just bought a 427T out of a big truck to build up and install it in my 55 Chevy. I have been told the pistons have a .400 height icrease on they which will limit the engine to under 4500 rpm so I was told to put 6.535 rods in it and stock 427 pistons. I have found the rods but can't find a piston to run with the heads I have with the head cast #3856213. I was going to get larger valves installed and run them with a weiand intake don't know what cam. Has anyone built a 427T for the street that will run up over 4500 rpm. Can you give me a list of parts used and est. of the power out put. I have also looked at the stroker kits for the engine but I was also told the engine will not take a 4.50 stroke or bigger.
ThanksLast edited by 93_406cobra; 05-20-2004 at 09:15 AM.

Thank you
I haven't bought the rods yet.
I may just go with the 496 or 540 stroker kit and new heads if it is going to be a big problem.

4500 ????? I ran 1 of those buggers in a dirt modified for years, tall deck, stock crank,Eagle rods. square port closed chamber heads,14.5-1 pistons on methanol, turned it 7200 on a regular basis for at least 6 seasons with nuthin more than rings & bearings once a season, still got it over in the corner just waitin for a 55 chevy some day...

I don't want to get a new crank. The one I have is forged. I really don't need it but I'm not going to get crap for it if I go to selling it. I see the biggest problem I'm having is the heads 98cc isn't that much. The smallest pistons I have found are for 100cc and are close to 10.0 to 1 ratio. I'm going to be driving this car alot and would like to run it on normal gas with no porblems. Does anyone recommend a stock cast head that I could use and locate easy. I've heard about the 781 and 049 but around here you are pressed to see any of they on any thing but a race car or a shelf with a huge price tag on it. I've also was told about the #14096188 heads how are they and about what price should a used set cost.

Ya don't hafta get a crank, just send it out and get it checked and polished, but ya will hafta get longer rods I can't remember the length but just call Eagle rods in Tennesse and tell em what your doin, if I remember they where 5 to 6 hundred,But ya got no choice other than having custom pistons built, these longer rods will let you use off the shelf 427 pistons.....Mines got TRW's in it if'n I remember right I know they where listed as 12.5 to 1 but with the closed chamber heads it bumped it up quite a bit...For street use and the gas we've got I'd keep it down to 9.5 to 1 and it'll still be a stump puller, Ain't nuthin like a big block cept maybe my buddy's 67 Hemi SataliteLast edited by HWORRELL; 05-20-2004 at 04:14 PM.

Those 213 truck heads are peanut ports for sure (220 cc intake ports if i remember right, have a similar set), you'll have to swap them if you plan on getting decent hp numbers.
If you stick with the original crank and use longer rods you can use Keith Black hypereutectic pistons, they have 3 part numbers available i think, that's what i'll use if i go with my 427 BB.
With a 3.76" stroke that thing will rev to the moon...

See if this spreadsheet helps you.
The first thing you need to realize is that you don't have to look at pistons earmarked for 427's. There are a lot of pistons which are for 454's which will work for your application. Case in point. You have a block with a deck height of 10.2" (maybe). So What I did was cut it down to 10.16 (.030" clean up to get square, you can adjust this however you need to). Then look at the pistons available. In this case I went to the old trusty JE Pistons Catalog. Part number 101256 has a compression height of 1.645 and a dome of 2cc. Not a lot but will still yeild 9.1:1 compression. Not sure what compression your after but you can always modify this later. Then look at the connecting rods available for the BBC. Speed O Motive has a rod that is 6.635" long. and with your 3.76" stroke your good to go. Now like I said the deck height is totally up to you now. As I have it in the spread sheet above the pistons will exit the block by .009". This is not really a bad thing but you could aviod it by not cutting the block a full .030". Cometic Gaskets sells gaskets in various thicknesses and with the setup I described you'll need there 4.32" bore .045" thick head gasket. This will give you a quench height of .036.
With the long rods you can spin this thing high daily and will have the longevity of a honda.
Now like I said if your not happy with the compression number JE has several other dome pistons with bigger domes, but you need to watch the dome sizes, if you don't get bigger combustion chambers the domes may not clear. I had to clearance my heads for the 37cc dome in my engine. You should be able to run 11.5 to 12:1 compression ratios with a cam intake open of 68 to 72 degrees and still run 93 octane. My motor is 11.75:1 with the cam intake opening at 68 deg. Look for heads with a 114 to 118cc combustion chamber and you can jump up to the bigger dome pistons in the catalog.
Good luck, if you have any questions about the spreadsheet or about the combo I threw together for you email me at egrelle@et-motorsports.cc I'll be glad to help you out.76 Vette - 438 BBC

427 tall deck.Watch out for core shift. Most people I know that have used this block for perfomance use sonic check the block.Don't use stock rods go to 6.535 rod or longer rods. Also rember you have to go to a tall deck intake.
