Ram Horns Exhaust Manifolds...
Hey, with the conversion i'm doing its gonna be tough to get a pair of headers to fit. So til then i plan on using Ram Horns Exhaust Manifolds. Will these really choke my engine? ( 408 SBC)
from what i hear, they're the closest exhaust manifold to a Header. They're off a 66 Impala with a 283 in it....
Any Info on these Exhaust Manifolds will be useful...
,Thanks

Trent,
These are a reasonably decent flowing exhaust manifolds for a factory set up, but the 283 passenger car is the smaller of the two available. There is also a "Corvette" version that has a 1/2" larger outlet which would give you better flow.
If you have room for these you should also have room for "block hugger" style headers, especially the tight tube from Hedman. They have the four pipes terminating in a semi flat collector that gives about 1 1/2 inches better clearance than the "conventional" block hugger.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Not all Corvette's had the 2 1/2 inch manifolds either (darn it). These are getting to be real hard to find. I agree about the block hugger headers, some of them fit tighter than the stock rams horns.

Corvette had some stainless steel exh manifolds that were made in the 70's & maybe in the 80's. These were supposed to be the best flowing sbc manifolds mfg by GM. Lingerfield(sp?) uses them on his super Vettes.
They appear to be not as sought after for I bought 3 prs for less than $75 each. I try to use them on all my projects if they will fit ...if not I use Sanderson.Don Meyer, PhD-Mech Engr(48 GMC Trk/chopped/cab extended/caddy fins & a GM converted Rolls Royce Silver Shadow).

I forgot to mention, you can actually buy the larger ram's horn manifold from your local Chevrolet parts department. Unfortunately they're fairly pricey, about a $100 each, WHOLESALE!!, and they have the gen/alt mounting cast on them. That's why you see the aftermarket headers so much.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
