Help!!!
I have a 48 chevy with a sbc 305 out of a 1987 firebird. It has a 4bbl carb on it. I just got the truck so I dont know much about it. It hasn't been driven in a long time. It was runnning fine for about 15 miles then it started to tick when under a load. I put octane booster in the gas along with fresh gas. It also sounds like it may need the valves adjusted, i only say that because now after lets say 20 - 30 miles it sounds like there is a little tap under the valve cover at idle. The tapping when its under a load is different and almost sounds like my F250 diesel. Any suggestions? I haven't shecked teh timeing yet but I fear thats not the issue. It seems to get wors the more I drive it. ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks! K9 I almost forgot, When I start it up in the morning (second day of ownership mind you) it has black stuff on the driveway, no oil or water just black powder. It doesn't do it anymore the rest of the day. The carb is a edelbrock 4bblLast edited by K9 48 Chevy; 01-10-2005 at 10:35 AM.

that black podwer is most likley from ur belt frying is should smell burnt replace ur belt and take a wire brush clean any imperfections on the pulleys the rubber will accumulate over time causing constant belt ware. pull the heads and relap the valves if u dont know what i am talking about just ask ur auto parts store they will hook u up pull the valve cover and check ur springs and rocker arms just make sure everything is secure and change the oil this seems like a valvetrain problem but i cant know without being there to see it. but just go through the whole engin and buy a sbc engin overhaul manual i like the haynes oneHonda Motor= 1.6L
Soda Bottle= 2L

the black powder is coming from the tail pipe not the belt. I need to know if anybody can tell me what makes the motor pre ignite. I pulled teh plugs and they look like charcoal gray to light milk chocolate color. I can also feel the plug wires jump when I hold them. The timeing on this motor is TDC. I have never seen a TDC timeing setting before. Tyler, I dont think I need to take the head off for pre-ignition. Thanks for trying.

i am talking about laping the valves u said that there was a tap at idle this could be a result of poorly seated valvesHonda Motor= 1.6L

Ok, this is what i have so far with my very small amount of skill. I checked the timing and the dist was hand tight to begin with so I went on with the checking of the timing. The "book calls for TDC. So i did the TDC and it SUCKED! So I then advanced it till i got spark knock (not like the original knock) and then went back. That cant be TDC for that motor. It came from a 1987 Firebird. Anyway, I ran it and now I have a what I think is a "rolling tick" or almost sounds like I have roller rockers (wich I dont) at Idle. I do think I have an exhaust leak but cant find teh dang thing so I shall buy the gaskets and replace the old ones. I do however have a FOUL smell coming from the exhaust. On the "test drive" in my case means drive it like I stold it I got it up pretty fast and now there is this sulfer smell. Could that be what the guy was talking about the rich exhaust and moisture? Its a real strong smell. I checked the plugs and they look ok. The water temp never got above 179 deg. I have no idea what to do. Thanks for the input
