i have an 87 chevy pickup.....and i have a 350 small block....sounds like lifter but im not sure only makes the sound when under preasure doesnt do it when i rev up in nuetrul or park. only drive and reverse if it is lifter how do i find out which one it is please help

you might have a lobe wore off of the cam. see if all of the valves are moving all the way up and down.

You need someone to sit in the truck, hold the brake of course, and you take a long screw driver, put the handle to your ear, and the blade over the top of the rocker location on each cylinder, have him, or her put a load on the engine in gear, and you listen until you hear which one it is.

Denny, I like your idea with the long screwdriver, but I personally like to use a piece of wooden broomstick handle or wooden dowel rod. JMHO.

Well, I have what you mentioned in my tool box. Hard wood, transfers the sound almost like Stereo, hahaha. In a pinch, and long screw driver will get the job done. Hahaha

a piece of heater hose will do in a pinch.

Probally loose tourqe converter bolts or cracked flywheel/flexplate.
