Backfire through the carb is timing, usually. Go back through, get TDC on your compression stroke and make sure that your number one plug wire is lined up to the rotor with the motor in this position. Gas in the oil is usually not a good thing, but could come from a number of places in a new motor. You may have flooded it and it ran down before the rings have set, Ive seen fuel pumps go bad and leak into the oil galley.
Change the oil, bump the engine until you have number 1 cyl in TDC on compression, pull the cap and look at the rotor, the end that fires should be directly under the terminal for number 1 spark plug. They usually run a tooth off, but two would make it spit a sputter. You may be out 180, that is have the #1 wire hooked up at TDC on the exhaust stroke.
Just sounds like timing to me.

if you are 180 out... you can always do the lazy mans method and reverse the wires on your distributor cap

you mentioned maybe you had incorrectly installed timing chain and alignment marks on cam. Make sure you have aligned the marks on crank gear and cam gear. If you already have, just start with the basics with what you do know for sure. Alignment marks set, #1 at tdc, Distr. rotor pointing at #1 cyl., and firing orders on plug wire correct.Ain't no feelin like Chevy mobilin

well you say it has no power and it backfires, if you really want to know how to fix your problem ill tell but first you have to promise to keep this a secret,1 thing you do is go dig a hole. 2. put the 350 in the hole and cover it up 3. go find some old ford "any will do cause they are all potent weapons against GM products" and put it in your ride, and finally youll have a street machine. but remember keep this a secret you promised .

hey blade another thing you can do to get your compression back up ( other then installing a ford) is squirt a little oil in each cylinder cause if you've gas washed the rings it will take some time to get it back up to par otherwise let it sit for a day or so and let the gas evaporate slowly, and i would put money on it that is where your getting the gas in the crankcase for ive had it happen to me years ago on my first ???? do i dare say cccchhevy
there i said it .

to help evaporate that gas quicker you can use a little catalyst i call ether.... and... to join in on the ford flame this thread has become, always remember that ford means first on race day

Hey blade, you have any luck on that chevy motor yet? I'm interested to know what happened. With both the gas and the timing.
And to all you ford fellas, man, givin' the poor fella heck. We've all heard the first on race day thing, but have you ever heard what FORD is backwards? Driver Returns On Foot.
I'm just playin' all
Blade, let us know.
