hard to say without knowing final compression ratio. why did you chose 305 heads ? just curios, rather odd combination of heads & camshaft, those 2 cant play real nice together.75 GMC C-15 factory 454, automatic, lowered

305 heads on 350
Hey Stepside, Would you have any serious hangups about installing 402 heads on a 454 or 454 heads on a 502?
How about running 283 heads on a 327?
The factory used the same castings and valve sizes on larger engines that were used in smaller engines.
It is obvoius flow is decreased & Horsepower decreases.
Low speed torque is increased w/throttle response.
H/O 305 heads flow better than 400 SBC truck heads with stock valve sizes.
Your rational judgement is in question.
I see this all the time people thinking 45 cubic inches is a big deal.
I wish people had a better grasp on math & better knowledge of stock parts.

DCURTIS
Assuming you have it running at it's best & it was broke in right *easier said than done*
More than 300 HP and no where near 400 HP Somewhere in the middle around 6000rpm
The limiting factor is the heads if you want to get closer to 400HP

Id have no problem installing 396 or 402 heads on a 454, infact some of the early closed chamber castings flow better than many of the heads used on 454s, espesially the peanut ports.
some of the 283s & 327s shared the same head...so, I mean that comment doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me.
I wont disagree that some of the heads used on the 400s didnt flow big #s, they werent intended to. its called low speed velocity.
& you can have the same effect using 305 heads on the 350, they dont flow big #s...and in some cases thats just fine.
However, looking at the cam he is using & the fact that he is using 3" exhaust...it doesnt look like he intends on having a low rpm torque motor ,that is using velocity. If he were, than Id consider smaller exhaust & a very differant camshaft.
I never said 45cubic inches is a big deal...unless your talking about a cylinder head that offered just adaquete performance on the smaller displacement engine & expect the same from the larger engine. The 305 heads will do OK....however...seems like an odd combo to me, I could be wrong, but there are so many better choices.
As far as my grasp on math....I dont know what your point is. as far as my knowledge on stock parts goes..Im no Grumpy Jenkins...but I think I know enough to stay out of trouble. Since you used the 402 head on a 454 as an example...maybe your knowledge of stock parts is questionable.
The H.O.305 head does flow decent & yes better than some 350 or 400 heads.... but we dont use those 350 & 400 heads for performance applications. JohnLast edited by stepside454; 03-26-2005 at 07:23 AM.

He's a stupid SOB and he's trying to talk to you about what's right? 305 heads don't have the valve size or the volumn on the ports to really perform on a 350. Yeah, you get a lot more compression, but compared to flow, that's not going to help you much. If your trying to make the 400hp mark, you've definitely got the wrong heads. They won't support the RPM you'd have to turn with the flow you'd need.Last edited by Oldf100fordman; 03-26-2005 at 12:53 AM.
