valve adjustment
i am getting ready to start my 283 for the first time i bought a haynes overhaul manual and it said that to adjust the valves you go through the firing order and when both the lifters for that cylinder are flush with the lifter valley you see if the push rods will twist if they twist then you need to tighten the spring till the it wont twist and then go one more turn i did this for all the valves and timed the engin with the balancer will i need to adjust them when the motor is running or is what i did fine the book made no mention of doing it when the motor is running

thats pretty tight. put the cam on tdc, twist the push rods by hand untill you feel them start to drag. go 1/2 turn and lock down. rotate the crank and do this at 180. 1/2 a turn of preload on a hyd lifter. You can also crank the motor back them off till they tick {one at a time} then tighten 1/2 turn past 0 lash. hope it helps. robert

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
