Comp cams
260H would be good,268H would be better. I have done the 268H in a 305 before. "Sounds like a 270H in a 350 at idle".
It was a real good combo and made good power. Or you could use one of the new Extreme series with close to the same specs.
The 110 lobe sep on the comps always sound good at idle if it is a decent size. Lot of midrange torque too.78 malibu

what would be the difference with the same cam just 114 lobe seperation rather than 110?Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Smoother idle"less overlap"
broader flatter power band
less midrange torque
But not real huge differences with cams this size. The main reason I was saying 110 is because you said you wanted a rough idle.78 malibu

Some cam makers are a little differant, and I've used Erson cams for twenty years. I,ve used them in just Chevy's, Ford's, Buick's and Dodge's. There T.Q. or thier torque series cams are excellent.
Their T.Q.30 cam is about the best street cam I have ever run.
Now it say's it has a fair idle but it is lopey, And makes your engine realy come to life when you hit the gas. I like to hear from
people that have actually run a certain cam. I've run most of their cams at one time or another, and this is the cam that has really
impressed me as a good every day street / strip performer.
This cam is lots of fun and dependable. It has a super strong mid range. Their number is 1-775-882-6600 then hit # 4.
Here's a cam chart for you to look at. Big Daddy Don Garlits also used these cams for years.

I like Herbert cams. $118 bucks with lifters for a solid cam, and they have a ton of grinds. Just give them a call and theyll find the best cam to meet your needs.
I run a .290-.300 duration, .490-.510 lift with 112 lobe seperation, the idle isnt too radical, but it supplies good power through almost all of the power band, but its lacking in the far bottom end.

I don't try to pick my own cam, I always call Scnieder cams tell em what I'm doing and what I expect and a few days latter the big brown truck shows up, never been dissapointed, figure them guy's been grinding cams a long long time and know whats up... In my younger day's on any street small block chevy ya just went to your local chevy dealer and told em ya wanted a corvette white sheet cam....

I'm gonna agree with the better part of the crowd and say call the cam company. You tell them what you want to do, they will ask a lot of questions, then they will send you what you want. I've used Erson, Lunati, Comp and probably a few I can't remember now and they have been good cams. Call the cam guys though, there are enough variables and they usually know best.

Thnx for all the replies. I called comp cams and they recommended a 262 extreme energy. Also called isky and they recomended a 264 mega cam.The comp is duration @.050 218 intake 224 exaust lift is .462 intake .469 exaust and lobe seperation 110 *........the isky cam is duration at .050 214 and lift is 450 lobe seperation at 108* ..........what do u think, any suggestions..both cams are the same price approx..175.00?MY cam choice would have been the factory muscle car grind for the 327 350 hp duration at .050 is 222......447 lift and lobe at 114..but now I think the smaller lobe sep is gunna give me the nasty idle I want..now its just a matter of what cam is close to all these and is gunna give a mean idle..track times arent that important .
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Those are all pretty good cams for what you are doing. Even that factory cam you are talking about is good but with the 114 it would be a little more tame. The extreme 262 falls in between, spec wise, with the 268H and the 270H. Pretty big cam for that 311 but it will definitely work, and work well.
To answer your question, the 262 extreme probably has the most lopey idle of that group you are asking about.Last edited by Skybu; 04-14-2005 at 05:41 AM.

That Erson TQ 30 cam has 228@50 and a Lopey Idle that makes every one turn their heads to see what just pulled in.

As an old timer out of the play for a long time, let me ask you guys something. In the Ancient Days, a lopey cam and open plenum intake manifold meant two things: no bottom end and quickly-fouled spark plugs. Since electronic ignitions took over with much, much higher firing voltages, I assume the clean-plugs problem is decreased, but... Are hi-po engines as touchy as they were? Nasty to keep rolling in ordinary (street) use?DougB

Nothing has really changed as far as I know. These cams we are talking about are not that big though. Just enough overlap to start sounding good. I built a high horse power 350 a while back. I first used the second design Chevy racing cam and then a custom made Ultradyne. It had ported Dart heads and a single plane Bowtie intake. That motor would kill plugs pretty damm quick If you didnt know how to drive it.Last edited by Skybu; 04-15-2005 at 05:27 AM.
