If your gonna use the soap and water method ( not the easiest in my opinion ) you should invite that special neighbour who know's what to look for,,,,(Propane works so much easier) and you need to pay close attention to where ever there is a Mating surface,,like intake to heads,,,,carb to manifold,,,hoses for cracking and such,,,,,get your hands in there and get dirty,,,another is to pull off the big vaccume line which goes to your brake booster,,and plug it with something real sealed,,,plastic bag maybee,,,and then start the car up,,,,see if there is any change,,,,try each rubber vaccume line going to your carb,,,and manifold,,,also the one going to your distributor.

when the motor is just idling,,,,the demand for air is less,,,so the motor will run a little better ( not a lot ) untill you open the throttle,,step on the gas,,,and that's just like opening a big whole down to your piston's,,,,your pistons drag air in on the downstroke,,,,thru the carb,,and into the manifold,,and into the cylinders,,,this creates a drop in air pressure below the ventury of the carburator,,,(air is 14.5 at atmosphere) this creates the effect of vaccume,,,,beside's the carb,,,the biggest vaccume user is the brake booster,,,so i usualy check that first,,,then i check my carb,,,then my hoses,,,then my manifold,,,,,,,every one has there own technique,,,,so mine is not the only one you will hear about,,,but it is the simplest i know of.

Brake booster( vaccume amplifier/accumulator) is on the drivers side of the firewall,,,it''s where your master brake cylinder resevior is located,,, it looks like a big pot,,,and the master cylinder sticks out of it,,,you'll see the big black hose coming from it,,,thats the vaccume line.
most vaccume lines will be on top of the motor,,,,there will be one at the transmision,,at the rear,,underneath,,,don't forget to check that one.
Too bad you live on the opposite side of the country,,cos i'd say bring over the beer and burgers,,and we'd have us a BBQ and a repair day.

Holy.....i wish you coulda said that earlier,,,ahh well,,at least it got you looking and you found the problem,,,,pull your oil dipstick,,and see if there is any foamy browny white residue on the stick,,if there is,,then you have water in the oil,,,and thats BAD,,either way,,,your gonna have to drain the oil out and flush the block,,after you get new head gaskets,,and have the heads checked at a machine shop,,,to see if they are cracked and warped,,,,dont fire the car up anymore,,,she's done,,,,,until you get the head gaskets fixed.
Sorry to hear that Mang......good excuse to crack open more beer.
